You bet it's a ratings bonanza but only because Letterman has handled it the way he did, with humor. He's a pro at self-deprecating humor. He even managed to work another apology in to Sarah Palin.
No, I don't believe this was someone's creation just to boost ratings, I believe it actually happened and Dave's not the kind of guy to just roll over and take it.
Since these encounters occurred prior to his marriage I can't see these revelations damaging his reputation one bit. It only proves he's a man, just like the rest of us.
And it shows that a good story sells. Dave's story not only has sex, back room trysts with co-workers and the discovery of a 'secret love den' at the studio, but also the criminal element of blackmail! What could be better than that to get people to tune in? Dave has become the victim!
Sex always sells because most people never get enough and they always have to know what's going on with someone else, especially famous and well-known people. Our lives are Boring with a capital B and many of us find we can actually live vicariously through others in a way to make our own lives more exciting. That's why soap operas never went out of style.
So if you're thinking about creating a story line to market with, there you go. But keep in mind that truth is stranger than fiction.
