- Gun: - multiple revolvers in .22, .38, .45 cal
- multiple semi-autos in 9mm (gave both .45s to adult children... one of whom was a fair hand with a grenade launcher during USMC training anyway)
- Rifle - several, some single shot, some semi-auto, one lever action... .22 and .45 cal. Gave the 30-30 to my brother.
- Shotgun - Browning 16 ga semi-auto, bolt-action .410, side-by-side double barrel 12 gauge coach gun
- other (please precise the type) - only if bb or pellet guns count
Most are used for other purposes, some were purchased specifiably for use in SAS shooting competitions, others go back to when I used to hunt (nowadays I'd rather shoot with a camera)... but any can be utilized in defense if needed.

That little Keltec is the one I helped a friend pick out for a purse gun.
She doesnt have a CCW, but she spends a lot of time alone at open houses and figures in a pinch she'd rather explain the presence of the gun in her purse to the cops afterward than be murdered... a fate that has unfortunately met others. A recent example the agent wasnt killed with a gun, but she was overpowered while alone in a house and stabbed 26 times. My buddy prefers having a way to even the odds.

The Kahr pm9 has a pretty short barrel length and is pretty concealable. The Keltec is a good distraction pistol, but it would be really hard to do more than that with it. If your friend is forced defend herself, she shouldn't take chances.
If someone deliberately breaks into my house with the intent to hurt me or my loved ones, I'm going to do more than distract them.

Yeah, I told her if she shot someone with it, it was liable to piss them off... but it was lightweight enough that she felt she'd keep it with her at all times and a small gun in the hand beat a heavy one sitting at home in a drawer. That's true, but you're correct about the ineffectiveness of the round. It serves as a deterrent against someone that doesnt wanna get shot, but offers little use in the way of terminal ballistics. There are composite .45s out now that'd make a much better choice.

Those are nice 1911's. How reliable are they?
I looked at the Kimber 1911, but the one I borrowed for range time kept jamming up. I guess Kimber is more mid-range.
I ask because I really liked the way the Kimber handled but don't want to have to think twice about dropping it in the dirt during tactical training classes, and having it jam on me when I pick it back up.
@Cricket and Rob: *laugh* Thanks! That might be because I used to live in Texas.

The 1911 mentionned above are very reliable. Springfield make some nice pieces, but the problem with them is that you cannot buy spare parts like slide or frame. Wilson combat, Kimber make some nice guns, but unfortunately most of the time you have to tune up them by a gunsmith. The exception is on high end 1911 custom, some brands already tuned the gun and don't need any gunsmith work, because it is already done.
The best 1911 are forged metal, in my opinion Les Bear are the best 1911. You can find others made from metal cast and aluminum, I don't recommend that if you want to keep it for a long time.
If you have a problem with feeding, you should ask your gunsmith to throat the barrel, basically you can put all kind of ammo after this little adjustment.
I am a target shooter, and I love accuracy.

Funny how people think that people die like they do in the movies, quick. Sorry, but that's not the way it really happens. Unless you make it a head shot (more difficult to do than you might think), you can fire 4 or 5 rounds of .45's into the chest of a 6', 235 pound guy high on pcp or meth and he'll still be able to get up and attack you, at least until he finally leaks enough blood to make his brain stop functioning correctly.
Fire and be ready and able to retreat if you need to. Don't allow yourself to be backed up against a wall or into a corner.
Nice to see you came out from under your hoody, Cricket. Nice pic.

Much as I love the 1911... Glock builds the best thing on the market if a defensive/tactical weapon is going to be exposed to any elements, followed by the Berretta .40mm. The rattly-ass WW2 era 1911A1s we trained on at Quantico could handle a little sand, but the finely tuned raceguns people use today would tend to object to that sorta abuse.
That's a sacriligious thing to say in front of anyone that's a 1911 devotee and I dont discount the value of a cocked & locked 1911 as the most potent and accurate tactical device available, but the damned things will take a lickin' and keep tickin' better than anything out there.
I hate Glock's trigger pull personally. I dropped a baseplate (oops) from a cheap mag I'd picked up for my Beretta and had to sub-in with the instructors Glock for a CCW test. Having to shoot an unfamiliar weapon for score set my teeth on edge. Functions well, but like most of the world I'm more accurate with a single action pull.
Added: Kimber builds the most feature rich 1911 out-of-the-box for the dollar spent... but the stuff he has up there is getting into serious upper line guns. Whatever you do... NEVER buy a 1911 made by Charles Daily. By the time you replace the weak springs and polish the shoddy workmanship it wouldve been cheaper and more effective to get a Kimber. Stove-pipes, failure to feed, misfires... not a reliable product.

That's what I don't like when you buy a 1911, you don't have the best parts in it.
I prefer to choose the best brand parts to build a custom gun by a gunsmith from frame to spings

You can have your 1911 of your dream and tune up the gun later by a gunsmith
