Former GM plant set to make electric cars

Electric carmaker Fisker Automotive said Tuesday it is buying an old General Motors plant in Wilmington, Del., and plans on making up to 100,000 vehicles a year at the recently shuttered facility.

"This is a major step toward establishing America as a leader of advanced vehicle technology," Henrik Fisker, Fisker's chief executive, said in a statement. "Wilmington is perfect for high quality, low volume production and will soon be the proud builder of world-class, fuel-efficient Fisker plug-in hybrids."

Until July, the plant had employed over 1,000 workers making Pontiac, Saturn and Opel sports cars for General Motors. GM closed the facility as part of its corporate restructuring.

Fisker says its new plant will employ 2,000 factory workers and support another 3,000 vendor jobs by 2014. Production is set to begin in 2012.

Latest company to go out of business making products that Americans won't buy:

Fisker Automotive...

Americans are too used to their fast cars and their need for speed. I don't see them giving it up any time soon.

I think it's a good move.

In a few years we will reach the point when 50% of the oil has been extracted and the prices will automatically jump beyond reach, those companies still producing fuel based cars will have to 1.-get rid of all their cars, selling them cheaper, and 2.-adapt to the new model, for which they will have very short time.

Those moving on to fuel-efficient technologies now are the smart ones.

Actually I think the one who will reach market first will be the detroit electric proton which is teaming up with a company in Malaysia to make the proton. It will get you 110 miles for a single charge and will cost around 23,000 bucks. They have a longer range model that will get you 200 miles per charge and will run you about 30 grand, plus the car looks great. They should be out in europe and asia in the first quarter of 2010 and North America in the 3rd quarter of 2010

Here is a pic of what teh car should look like

A few glitches for electric cars

Your fancy new green machine is parked in the garage, but how are you going to charge it up?
