Black Friday fails to boost stores

Thanksgiving weekend sales couldn't save a disappointing November for retailers; teen sellers hit hard.

Retailers placed a lot of hope on the Thanksgiving weekend gift buying this year, but merchants failed to get the big sales boost they were seeking.

According to monthly same-store tracker Thomson Reuters, overall sales rose just 0.5% last month versus its forecast for a 2.1% increase. The figure does not include leading retailer Wal-Mart Stores (WMT, Fortune 500), which reports sales on a quarterly basis.

The firm tracks same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, for such large national chains as J.C. Penney (JCP, Fortune 500), Macy's, Target (TGT, Fortune 500) and Gap (GPS, Fortune 500).

Still, the marginal increase is an improvement over last year's steep 7.8% decline in November.

"The fundamentals for many Americans are still weak," said Scott Hoyt, senior director of consumer economics with Moody's Economy.com.

I agree and it will be weaker...

People are still cautious with their spending....

However, maybe they are waiting for more price cuts.......the retailers have to reduce inventory. Less profit is far better than no profit.

It is a catch 22, small retailers are not making huge profit like many people think.

The shipping cost play an important part because of the gas prices. If you take each step on how a product transit from his conception to the customers final destination. For our online store we pay the shipping from Hawaii which is not cheap, then offer free shipping, or free shipping wiht a minimum order, then take my truck to the post office using gas. You can use their pick up service, either you have to pay extra or it takes so long that you cannot provide a quick delivery frame time to customers.
Profits cannot be high because of the competition. Sometime I am working with 0 profit on our deal offers.

Huge profits are made from big corporations or franchises.
