Flier Patience Wears Thin at Checkpoints

Quote:
As the Transportation Security Administration scrambles to address vulnerabilities in procedures for screening cargo, it is facing growing criticism from travel industry groups over the escalating security measures for passengers.

In recent weeks, representatives from the International Air Transport Association, the U.S. Travel Association, the Allied Pilots Association and British Airways have criticized the T.S.A., saying it adds intrusive and time-consuming layers of scrutiny at airport checkpoints, without effectively addressing legitimate security concerns.

The U.S. Travel Association, in fact, is worried that the more onerous screening process will discourage air travel.

“The system is broken, it’s extremely flawed and it’s absurd that we all sit back and say we can’t do anything about it,” said Geoff Freeman, executive vice president of the association. The group has convened a panel of transportation leaders to recommend a better way to balance security with a more efficient and honed screening process.

Travel industry representatives say they are primarily concerned that security procedures unnecessarily burden the vast majority of travelers and crew members. The government, they argue, should instead be using intelligence to develop a risk-based approach to screening passengers.

Specifically, they point to the new body scanners that are replacing metal detectors — which have raised privacy and health concerns, as well as prompted legal challenges — and the more invasive pat-downs, which have set off complaints about disrespectful treatment by agents.

I personally am happy with the bringing in of body scanners and we have had them in the UK for a little while now.

You have 2 choices, a fully body search or walking through a body scanner and I gladly choose the scanner, it's quicker, less (manually invasive) and yes, it is meant for our security.

I would rather be uncomfortable for a few seconds and feel a lot safer on the plane, knowing that everybody has been checked thoroughly.

It is a sad state of affairs but it is the way of the world and yes, there are people that want to terrorise the UK, the USA and many other countries.

If I need to take a plane, I know that I will be checked.

Regarding the article and the new safety concerns, I believe that many people will stop taking the planes.

Nah! If they want to view the big one I don't care. Let them be jealous.

Now the small seats on the planes are are a concern.

You're not just giving up your rights and dignity.
You could be giving up your health, too.

Alexandrov and co have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they've found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication.
Are you in first class, business class or cancer class?

Like gamma radiation, it looks like THz is a normal part of the environment as well.

You just don't want to walk through it every day. I guess frequent flyers should request the more time consuming pat down or that running that wand thing all over your body check

Of course, terahertz waves are a natural part of environment, just like visible and infrared light. But a new generation of cameras are set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe.

I'm all for increased security on airplanes.

I no longer fly ... since the 2000 election was 'stolen'

Still travel, just not in a rush that requires 'flying'

Please do not bump a 6 year old topic. It went flat for a reason.
