Does he exist? If so, is Satan a person or simply a force or presence?

Usually manifested thru the actions or deeds of humans .. exists as both conceptual and physical entities ..

God is presented in much the same way as that ..

Didn't find it in the rules so discussions about religion don't seem to be forbidden here but these usually end up in some form of mud-wrestling and flaming.

With that being said, I don't believe satan exists. I do believe the church used stories like that to scare the people over thousands of years in order to control them. Nobody needs a middleman to connect with god.

Disclaimer: To each his own. Respect other people's opinions. There are several forms of "truth" and yours might be different from that of the next person. We are all unique, lived in different conditions so our beliefs are unique as well.

Pretty much any topic can be discussed as long as the members are communicating and expressing views in a reasonable and polite manner.

Mods will only take action if and when a discussion becomes out of hand.....this rarely happens as the community generally display a high level of courtesy.

I have to agree with what Snooks said. Most of the members here and all of the ones that last communicate opinions well and politely like you did in your post. The world would be a very boring place if we all agreed on everything.

The world would be a boring place indeed but you never know when a fanatic hits a thread like this. I'm glad though that this forum is really chilled and has thoughtful mods to take care of these things. Thanks

Yeah. I can recall the old days when Prodigy shut down their religion forum because they could not or would not control the flamers. The sad thing to me was that the extreme posts came about equally from the right and the left.

I'm a little lost on the Satan/middleman argument. Why do you say the church made him up?

Just like God's existence, our belief in satan's existence is really irrelevant. Existence is independent of one's belief. Either he does or he doesn't.

Doesn't this argument presuppose its conclusion?

All one has to do is look at the massive evil and injustice in the world to know that there is some force that moves in that direction.

Interesting question Muddy. If it is an exterior force we must concede in part that we may not me masters of our own fate...and neither are others. If it is a predisposition then we must concede that people are not inherently good...nor are we.

For predisposition questions I think it's helpful to look at children. As soon as children start learning to make any choices for themselves they start temper tantrums. That leads me to the conclusion that something in our nature is not inherently good.

But the questions of evil and satan, while undeniably linked, are not the same. To believe that satan himself is responsible for all evil one must, at a minimum, ascribe the godlike quality of omnipresence to him.

To define the one is to simultaneously define the other.

Likewise, to ask what is evil is to ask what is good.

Very true. Both are tied together part and parcel. So...what is good? What is evil?
