there are 13 year old (and younger) children who bring guns to school and kill people. Is that a threat to other kids? What if that kid had gone to school and said "I'm bringing a gun to school tomorrow and blowing you guys away'? Should we not take him seriously because he's just a kid? Just because someone is young, does that mean they are incapable of carrying thru on their threats?

Doesn't this come down to being responsible for your actions, including what you say? We don't even know what the email said - it could have been mild but what if he said he was going to hijack a plane and fly it into the white house? Should we take that seriously?

Dustin makes an excellent point - where do you draw the line? You can't dismiss anyone who makes threats because we don't know if they are capable of going through with them. You can't just sit back and do nothing, although that seems like what people always want to do. In a way, it's even scarier that this kid WAS only 13; because that's pretty young to be so focused as to send threating emails to the Mayor - the majority of kids aren't going to think of that. Plus, the fact that kids haven't developed the ability to truly understand the consequences of their actions (in my opinion) so, clearly a warning needs to be sent to this kid now so that he understand that you can't just go around making threats and possibly following through with them.

That's the scary part - what if at some time he felt like he 'had' to follow through?
