WASHINGTON — People in the United States are getting sick more often from imported foods in recent years, and seafoods and spices from Asia are the most common culprits, US health authorities said Wednesday.
After reviewing cases of reported outbreaks from 2005 to 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 2,348 illnesses were linked to imported foods, with half of the cases occurring in 2009 and 2010.
Fish-linked outbreaks were the most common source and nearly 45 percent of all imported foods causing sickness came from Asia, said the CDC report, presented at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta, Georgia.

Crikeys, this is a worry. I have a couple kilos of frozen fish and prawns in the freezer, mostly from Thailand. Been eating it for years though and I would have thought that the cooking process kills all the germy bits. Never got the hang of sushi so that may be the problem that causes illness.

There is no need to worry since complete cooking will kill almost all the germs but not the toxins that would have been produced before cooking (pre-formed). Know the source of production, how it is processed, packed and transported before it reaches the consumer, i.e. you, to have the peace of mind...

Most of this has to be down to the Junk food that is eaten in North America, Chicken nuggets in the UK were banned in schools because they contained feathers, skin, beaks and all the other bits that could not be sold, it was minced to a fine paste then formed into nugget shapes..If this happen on the UK then mark my words it happens in the USA also, now multiply that by most of the commercial pre packed products you eat

Definitely they are processing the "bits" and selling them. Chicken nuggets, "pink slime" in burgers, etc. And yes, fast food outlets are some of the biggest offenders.
Not real happy on the seafood part, but it doesn't surprise me. It's not so much the bacterial contamination that is worrisome, as Luckyman said. That can be cooked out. It's all the OTHER junk that comes in it.
I love seafood, and I know fish is good for you but ... since the Gulf oil spill, I haven't cared for fish from there. And anyone who checks out the news knows what's in the water floating around China's overcrowded docks. You can't safely eat any of it. (Maybe Alaska's wild-caught salmon is your best bet, but I don't care for salmon.)
Actually talked to a fish farm about getting fingerlings. Sigh ... another project? But it does produce really cool opportunities for hydroponics.

Too bad I can't grow tuna on my farm. I like tuna. But I think the only tuna eaten around here in quite some time has gone to getting the cat to take her medicine.
