Australian Government Moves to Expand Surveillance Powers

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/0...illance-powers

Quote:
Australia is the latest democratic nation to introduce new national security measures that would vastly expand governmental surveillance powers, following an alarming legislative pattern thatís also unfolded in the United Kingdom and Canada in recent months.
Thoughts on this? Any words/thoughts from our fellow Australian members here, if any?

Greeted with a large yawn mostly. Whatever.

Some warn us this is the beginning of the loss of freedoms but they get told "well if you don't do anything wrong you have nothing to fear and if it helps catch baddies it's good".

Google, Facebook, phone companies and such apparently record everything we do electronically anyway. May as well mix the government in there too.

The privacy of communication and correspondence should be inviolable except probably upon lawful order of the court as when public safety requires otherwise. The proposed act of giving the government power to eavesdrop upon the online activities of people is a violation of our right to privacy but if the purpose of requiring internet service providers and telecom companies to retain records of their subscribers activities and available for any government agency to inspect is to protect the government and its citizen from harm, then the proposed surveillance power of the Australian government seems reasonable but there should be court order to prevent abuses.
