'Run, Hide, Fight': Video teaches citizens how to handle mass shooting

Quote:
HOUSTON, Texas -- Ominous music plays as a man in dark clothing, sunglasses and a backpack walks toward people working in a high-rise building. The narrator's voice warns: "It may feel like just another day at the office, but occasionally life feels more like an action movie."

Moments later, the man opens fire on a security guard near an elevator.

It's the beginning of a nearly six-minute video created by the City of Houston in an effort to teach residents what to do during a shooting. Homeland Security officials said they realized during training exercises that first responders knew how to react but citizens were far less knowledgeable.

The video emphasizes a short mantra - run, hide, fight - to help people remember their options. The video was made using $200,000 from a federal grant, and its release was expedited following last month's movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo.

"As children we're all taught by the fire department to stop, drop and roll if you're on fire," said Richard Retz, who works for the Mayor's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security and helped produce the video. "Unfortunately, with our society the way it is today, we felt that there had to be a new one."

I am interested to heard from you guys, what are your thoughts on protecting yourself from this kind of situation?

call 911 ...

nothing much one can do than play it by ear -

I am never going to carry a "gun" but if I got a hold of one, his / hers I would certainly use it to blow whoever into oblivion.

When the emergency strikes......most people will panic.....
And that is when bad things can happen.....

It is just natural for untrained and unpracticed people to react, most times, in a predictable manner, panic....

Any tips provided by public service may help......and one life saved is worth the effort...and the money...)

Yes calling 911 is really what we must do, but before they arrive on the scene what are you willing to do?

I completly agree with you that one life saved is worth the effort.

Again what best tips can you give before the police arrive on the scene?

Since I just renewed my carry permit....I am sure that I can think of something....)

My best tip to the public...is to work on fast starts and fast exits....
Hiding would be second.....

Well, there are not many solutions, IMO running if you don't have the tools with you to defend yourself will be the first solution.

In the video mentionned above, they are missing the part that you can have a CWP and fight back, pretty biased if you want my opinion.

I think all of these attacks show that the society is in a very deep troubles, the root of the problems is deeper than the gun control agenda.

The society is losing it's own morals and values.

Don't overlook the fact that there are more than a few crazies walking the streets of every city in every country......

The big stories get known..... the tiny stuff goes unnoticed by the majority...

That's very true. I think that the people don't realize how tough it is to be police officer, I guess they are seeing all kind of situations inimaginable.

I politely disagree there are very many ... crazies, to the extent of committing murder - in the entire country.

for a society to arm itself with weaponry for so few is the test of ones persuasion.

guns are a Forbidden Fruit - not their physical presence or their practical application but their allure that fosters a false pretense of personal stature.

The producers of this video should have their pants pulled down and be kicked way, way into some dark abyss.

The chances of a person being involved in a mass slaughter is as remote as a attack by a great white shark.

"Be alert not alarmed" and just enjoy life.

You might want to rethink that position.
There were 12 deaths world wide due to shark attack in 2011.

We are about 25 miles from the place to get shark bit in Florida....New Smyrna Beach.....
Fortunately no recent deaths....

And for those (named Breeze Wood) who don't believe that people get shot on a daily basis....just watch the news on TV...

In the 70's, as a patrol officer, I commonly handled two shooting in a single night....
(A two man unit could handle one, including arresting a suspect in 4 hours)

Flippin hell

Doesn't this suggest that gun control is needed?? When does it finally hit home that having 88 guns per 100 Americans means lots of shootings. I despair.

I don't have a gun, I don't need a gun. I mean sure there was a murder around the corner a few years ago and last night another bikie got himself shot in the leg not 20 minutes drive away, that doesn't mean I need a gun.

Here's a little bit of fun for you.

Last week I was in a Gun Free zone, a country actually. Just wondering how America and Americans would handle this place:

Just a giggle.
