German city prepares welcome for Bush

Funny that, I couldn't find an article or picture of it in the English language, so you'll have to do with a Dutch article, but the picture says it all.

Well, you can't read any newspaper in Europe or there's some article in there about new American human right violations and other nasty stuff the American administration is up to, If they would not be so loud and intrusive we wouldn't even notice them, and WE pay for all their crap btw, do you have any idea how much of our tax money is borrowed to the US? They not only lend money from China, they are borrowing everywhere, and begging for help in the form of troops, etc.

They ask for attention, so they get it.

That was somewhat eye-opening. Not so much the picture, but reading the "readers comments". Turns out you're considered extreme left in your own country as well.

No we are not, but compared with the US the whole world is extreme left.

Me thinks you misunderstood the comments, most people commented about Bush's war crimes and that they don't feel he is welcome, and hypocricy, another issue that always pops up when it's about the US.

Most comments were anti-Bush...yes. The one's that weren't were educating.

I can use a translator as well as you, and the comments are clear. Many are embarrased by the display and feel that it's a misuse of freedom of expression. They feel that left extemists destroy their ability to be taken seriously with such outrageous displays.

That's fine that you feel that way, my only point is that your point of view is radical left even in your own land. I didn't know that before now.

Some of the comments, translated by babelfish

Quote:
I find Bush and its policy an insult for Europe. We do not want to that war criminal here, let him nicely stay away.
Quote:
Top that picture, which is what complete Europe must put up to the US. Backward country with that hypocritical behaviour mbt sex, drugs, smokes, and arms trafficking. Everywhere where they come war arises. To let we hope that the gezegde "hoogmoed comes for the fall" of application are for the US! They think that they better are than the rest of the world but in the meantime not even know where Belgium lies. Rot on Bush and continue in the white house sit, (voor as long as it lasts far still) doors on lock and key throw away!
Quote:
Complete neat manner of protest an automatic weapon would also been right. America brings peace with weapons. That has never worked. All wars in the world end up from at last belief oook at Bush. With its "mai god be with you"

Yes, again, most comments were made by anti-Bushers.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, I was just awakened by some comments I read. Just like here, there are those on the extreme left who hate Bush, Republicans, and often everything American, and there are those who recognize them as such.

I'm actaully glad to read it. The world needs it's left-wingers (for balance I suppose), but it's nice to know everyone doesn't feel that way, and radicalism is seen for what it is everywhere.

One thing you should know southnow, and that is that we are not considered as being left/right in our country, people's opinion doesn't make them typically left or right wing down here, that's something you find in the US but down here we don't see it that way

being against human right violations is considered left in your country but down here it's considered humane and both left and right are against human right violations, we do have respect for international laws and treaties like the Geneva convention and the UDoHR

me. for example, have opinions that are considered 'left' but I also have opinions that are considered 'right', myself I think that in general it's somewhere more nuanced

Being against human rights violations is not considered "left" in the US, Ferre. I agree with you on some things, but I think your perception of the US as a whole is a bit erroneous.

I agree. And what's concervative there I guess just isn't here. That's understandable. You guys have public healthcare and such, right?

Yes, our country would be considered socialist by US standards. We have very social healthcare laws and such.

We are a very rich country and we feel that we should protect and help those who need it. Afterall we can do that very easy, it just costs a few cents but that's only a minor percentage of the total budget.

Off topic and just real quick...I'm curious. How does that work? Are the clinics funded by the government directly, or are the clinics private... but citizens carry a government funded "insurance" of sorts?

Every single Dutch citizen has healthcare insurance by law, if someone is out of job or can not work for whatever reason and can not pay the insurance (which covers every single treatment) the country will pay for it. There are both private and state owned hospitals but the actual costs are for the insurance companies, who used to be mostly civillian corporatetives but got privatized only last year.
Hospitals and other health facilities are partly subsidized by the government, you can compare the system with how schools are funded, it's about the same system. The healthcare insurance includes dental and all other healthcare btw. Every 6 months we go to the dentist for a checkup and things are fixed before they can get bad. Every year we have a total health checkup.

The good thing about the system is that the law states that when there's two medicines that contain exactly the same substance, doctors and hospitals have to subscribe the cheapest one, so big companies have less grip on perscription drugs.
