Supreme Court lets embryonic stem cell research go forward

Let's try to talk about something other than gun control for a while. I hope this can be a civilized conversation. Please express your views, attack the opinions if you must but do not make personal attacks.

The Supreme Court refused to step into the emotionally charged debate over embryonic stem cell research Monday, declining to hear a case that sought to stop government funding on ethical grounds.

The decision leaves in place President Obama's 2009 executive order expanding research on stem cells taken from human embryos,.......................

I will be honest and tell you right upfront that I have mixed emotions on this subject and none of them are related to to the president that issued the executive order.

The reason I don't like embryonic stem cell research is because we are supposed to preserve life. Not kill it or play with it. I believe embryos are alive and we should not kill life. Imagine being in that Embryos shoes for a minute. How would you feel if you knew you were never going to grow up. Never have a chance to see your mothers face? And never have a chance to celebrate your first birthday. I would be sad!!

I found this somewhere to back up my opinion. "Harvesting ESCs kills the embryo, but harvesting adult stem cells does not kill or harm the adult. Many involved with the research of embryonic stem cells do not believe a new person begins at conception or don’t care. Embryonic stem cells are viewed as property, not people."

The most promising work with stem cells is with using a person's own stem cells which completely avoids the use of embryonic cells. Work with cord blood has also seen great promise.

The idea that we are even debating this is more of a testament to a culture that wants to do what it wants, when it wants even if it doesn't make sense.

Note, this is all about government funding of embryonic stem cell research. If a private firm wants to conduct their own research with their own funds ... ethical issues aside... they can do that.

the Garden is not without violence - is there a difference between stem cell research and raising cattle for slaughter ?
