US lawmakers scrutinize North Korean partnership with South

................

The cash-strapped North needs the money to help fund its vast military and its nuclear weapons program. But it's the South – where 123 companies employ 53,000 low-wage North Korean workers to produce low-cost goods right across the demilitarized zone – that has been exposed to blackmail. This past week, Pyongyang temporarily shut down the site and demanded as a condition for restarting operations that Seoul “apologize for its deeds that hurt the North's dignity” for saying the North needed the cash flow.

“apologize for its deeds that hurt the North's dignity” for saying the North needed the cash flow.

the title for the article does not fit the paragraph above - it was the North that shut down the facility.

maybe I am just being played again by the underdogs but the North Koreans have a right to self determination.

Lawmakers who want to bleed North Korea dry have mounting misgivings about the South's business partnership with the rogue communist country.
also from the article .... the same old, same old.
.............

this really is about the power struggle inside NK and whether or not it is Un in charge or the military - if people thought about it, Un may still be the lesser of the two evils.

Breeze, I totally think that the North Korean leader is NUTS and so are the brainwashed generals that follow him.

FACT... They rather people starve so that they can spend money on shows of military strength.

FACT... You are allowed freedom of speech as long as it matches the "Supreme Leaders" views, or else you will be killed.

FACT... They want the West to leave them alone as they develop Nuclear Capabilities but in the same token they make videos on Nuke'ing the West.

FACT... Some of their generals use the same tactics to brainwashing people that were used in Nazi Germany during the Nuremburg Rallies, and they even admit to using the same techniques.

FACT... kim jong un can threaten the western world with nukes but when the south Koreans hold their own protests, he gets upset and threatens to deliver "Sledgehammer Blows" because it insults their "supreme leader" http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013...er-blows-south

This guy seriously thinks he's god and needs to be brought down a peg or two.

ok G10 except I am doubtful the Generals are following the nepotite but the other way around - or unfortunately a power struggle that either way will only enhance the military over the govt.

"the North Korean leader is NUTS"

still not convinced but have little regard for his military posturing .... though I doubt anyone could be in control in NC that does not adhere to the GunLovers.

Again, you have to look at the history to understand who and how the players participated in the game.

Quote:
After the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War resumed between the Chinese Communists and the Chinese Nationalists. While the Communists were struggling for supremacy in Manchuria, they were supported by the North Korean government with matériel and manpower.[49] According to Chinese sources, the North Koreans donated 2,000 railway cars worth of matériel while thousands of Korean served in the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) during the war.[50] North Korea also provided the Chinese Communists in Manchuria with a safe refuge for non-combatants and communications with the rest of China.[49]

The North Korean contributions to the Chinese Communist victory were not forgotten after the creation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. As a token of gratitude, between 50,000 to 70,000 Korean veterans that served in the PLA were sent back along with their weapons, and they would later play a significant role in the initial invasion of South Korea.[49] China promised to support the North Koreans in the event of a war against South Korea.[51] The Chinese support created a deep division between the Korean Communists, and Kim Il-Sung's authority within the Communist party was challenged by the Chinese faction led by Pak Il-yu, who was later purged by Kim.[52]

After the formation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Chinese government named the Western nations, led by the United States, as the biggest threat to its national security.[53] Basing this judgment on China's century of humiliation beginning in the early 19th century,[54] American support for the Nationalists during the Chinese Civil War,[55] and the ideological struggles between revolutionaries and reactionaries,[56] the Chinese leadership believed that China would become a critical battleground in the United States' crusade against Communism.[57] As a countermeasure and to elevate China's standing among the worldwide Communist movements, the Chinese leadership adopted a foreign policy that actively promoted Communist revolutions throughout territories on China's periphery.

Unfortunately this divided country is supported by two different blocks as a result of the cold war, and the koreans are in the middle of the geopolitic chessboard.
