President Can't Hold His Own Umbrella?

WOW! Our president needs a marine to hold his umbrella for him?

Is that the norm?

They probably just forgot to post the instructions on a teleprompter for him.
How could he possibly have known how to hold an umbrella without them?

Hey, now this is a bit rude, and a bit funny that you guys said he couldn't hold his umbrella, but the other guy is in the same position and I don't think there are two USA presidents. I'm not from USA so I really don't care.

Also when you take a speech you normally use your hands to show that and this and trying to explain that and this.

And if he really was holding his umbrella on his own, I think one of the people that was listening, showing his respect, will come there and hold it for him.

Did you watch the video to see exactly how the Turkish Prime Minister ended up with a Marine holding his umbrella for him?

I did a quick google search and according to this blog, it looks like technically, Marines aren't really supposed to hold umbrellas.

http://politix.topix.com/homepage/60...s-on-umbrellas

I did hear President Obama say that he was more worried about The Turkish Prime Minister than his own comfort.

According to the White House website there are 488 White House staffers (and apparently, many of them are really well paid).

http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-r...l-records/2012

Maybe one of those folks instead of two Marines in uniform might have been a better choice.

Of course, he is the Commander-in-Chief. I think that means he can do what he wants.

I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but he's been in office long enough that you'd think there would be a rain shower contingency plan.

I guess it bears asking why are the Marines there to begin with? Are they just window dressing?

Oh, just found another article that shows the President holding the arm of one of the Marines and comically looking up at the sky.

<sigh>

Take a quick look at the photos and their captions.

So. Do you think everyone is overreacting or is all this fuss warranted?

It is against military regulations for armed forces members of the United States to hold an umbrella while in uniform. Female members are allowed to use an umbrella as long as it is held in the left hand, to allow for saluting with the right hand.

This imagery was a pure disgrace for the Marines standing there.

swedal, that's a picture of a foreign military member. Maybe Canadian. There regs are different than the US military.

Try again...

Would be really nice to see a whole lot less hate and bitterness for the duly elected president of our nation.

It is ok for a republican to have an umbrella held for them but not a democrat??? Seriously?

It would not matter if it was a marine or John McCain holding that umbrella. If it were Michelle Obama holding it for her husband the right would be crying about how derogatory it was for women.

Not everything has to be partisan. The guy was giving a speech with a foreign diplomat in the rain. The marines were there, they obviously were prepared with a couple umbrellas because they had them and they used them to keep the President and the diplomat from getting soaked. If they were prepared for it well it must be one of their duties.

What could possibly be wrong with that?

Even if not a "official duty" they are military and subject to the UCMJ. When I was in I had to do more insane things than that which were not "official duties".

That's why there are military regulations, to instill discipline and order. Would you run around with an umbrella so you wouldn't get wet in a firefight?

I don't know what kind of military you served in but when I was in the US Army, I was "always on duty" and ready to go anywhere the CINC said I needed to go.

And in a country with so much weather technology, doppler radar, and other tools, this idiot couldn't go online and see that there would be a "chance of showers" over the rose garden....no excuse, the man is an empty suit as a leader and a failure as a president.

I think the argument is that he shouldn't have been had the Marines hold umbrellas. That's not a partisan argument. I think you were the first person to mention political parties.
