The Raisin Outlaw of Kerman

This case went all the way to the Supreme Court before being kicked down to a lower court.

Meet Marvin Horne, raisin farmer. Horne has been farming raisins on a vineyard in Kerman, Calif., for decades. But a couple of years ago, he did something that made a lot of the other raisin farmers out here in California really angry. So angry that they hired a private investigator to spy on Horne and his wife, Laura. Agents from a detective agency spent hours sitting outside the Hornes' farm recording video of trucks entering and leaving the property.

What did the Hornes do to become the subject of a surveillance campaign? They sold raisins. More specifically, they sold all the raisins they produced.

In most other industries, selling all the goods you can make is just good business. But in the raisin world, things are different. In the raisin world, this can be illegal.

Any thoughts?

Seem fair to you?

I wonder what happens to all those reserve raisins.......

I think a free man should be able to sell every raisin he owns if he so desires.
A free woman should have the same ability.

As a free woman, I concur.

I may go plant some raisins (grapes) next week and defy the authorities and eat every single one.

Apparently there is a Florida congressman trying to pass a bill to eliminate the Raisin Administrative Committee. This whole thing is so ridiculous. Almost worse the the guy who was arrested for collecting rainwater... on his OWN PROPERTY. Apparently the Government owns the air as well.

I hadn't heard of that until now. Thanks for referencing it.

Unbelievable.

One item I take umbrage with is the author's tone related to how much water the owner needs on his own land.

My answer is... as much as he thinks he does.

I guess I don't sit around thinking.... "You've got more than enough of something, what's wrong with you" as a general rule of thumb.
