Thumbs down Black Friday Starts Early: Stores Open On Thanksgiving

It's not even Halloween yet but the Black Friday controversies are in full swing.

It seems some major stores such as Macy's, J.C. Penny, Kohl’s and many more will be opening early on Thanksgiving evening, some as early as 8PM.

Help me understand what the big deal is. If you don't agree with Thanksgiving shopping then don't go shopping on that day. Problem solved, right? If no one shows up to shop at these stores, then I am guessing they won't plan to open early next year. Of course this means you may be scheduled to work on Thanksgiving along with those who have always worked on the holiday such as our military, police, fire departments, hospitals and more.

Not everyone is surrounded by family on Thanksgiving and not everyone cares about football. Maybe We The People shouldn't feel the need to control what others choose to do in every circumstance....

How do you feel about stores opening on Thanksgiving? Why?

Ha--I guess I'll be the first to reply, and in my case it's with a big fat "I don't really care." I know people are irritated by the ever-increasing commercialism of the holidays, but I've watched that happen for years and am pretty much immune to it. Can't wait to start shopping for Christmas trees before Labor Day, in fact. But people get irritated and they want others to share their irritation, is all it seems to me.

Retail is a tough gig and the Christmas season is the toughest part of the year. One of my daughters works for one of the above. In this family friendly place I can't repeat her thoughts on the subject.

We used to open the pizza places at about 5 PM on Turkey Day but we staffed the place with volunteers.

Up to 60% of the year's retail business for a lot of stores occurs in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

With the economy, they are doing everything they can to make their numbers. This means they'll continue employing the number of folks that they do.

Shop or don't shop, it's your and my choice. Like you said, Cricket, if enough people don't shop, then stores won't do it next year.

I'm tired of this new society where everyone has an opinion, a need to share it and the total lack of civility that seems to be normal nowadays.

To me these kinds of controversies are a crazy. Isn't life full of enough of it's own controversies?

The table turned out very nice, but not quite to that extent (as in the picture) - but ya, pretty close. I've only been in the US for Black Friday one time and loved it.

In fact, my brother in law wants me to come down to AZ for a car purchase because the deals on 2YO cars are pretty darn nice.

Table? We just shovel it from the pans onto the paper plates. Some years we do dump the cranberry jelly into a bowl; most years we dip right out the can.

If I do go, my evil twin will be out that night. I may need bail money.

You are a very brave man. I haven't ventured out of the house during that weekend for many years except for one quick run here or there and far from the mall. If I buy anything it will be from this keyboard.
