Thumbs down Biggest Loser Winner: Did She Go Too Far?

Social media is going a bit crazy right now over the somewhat gaunt, somewhat frail appearance of Rachel Frederickson in the finale of the Biggest Loser.

She went from 260 pounds to 105 pounds. This article states that she is 5'4 but she has reported being 5'5.

Is this the message we want to send as being healthy?

I have read the article but must admit to not seeing that particular show, though looking at her lower neck, she does not seem completely anorexic.

Her BMI is around 18 and a healthy weight for someone of her age and height would be between 107lb - 145lb, and her weight is 104.9lb (UK BMI measurements)

Also, her mental state seems to be fine..
Quote:
"My journey was about finding that confident girl again. Little by little, challenge by challenge, that athlete came out. And it sparked inside me this feeling that I can do anything I can conceive. And I found that girl, and I'm just going to embrace her fully," she said.
Definitely not the message we want to send for promoting health, but then as a society, we have become so accustomed to seeing overweight (ok, I will go un-politically correct here), fat people as the norm that we seem to be at two extremes.

That said, I don't see it as completely disastrous here, she could be a lot worse.

She lost 60% of her body weight in just over 7 months.

Definitely not good Cricket, though reading a little between the lines on the article, I am assuming that her weight problem and eating were due to depression due to circumstances and not a thyroid problem..

As soon as she had a firm goal (ok, and the cameras on her) she suddenly had a firm goal and as an ex championship swimmer, she applied her training to get fitter and achieve her goal.

I don't think they should give her a hard time and I hope that they are not because from what I read, it seemed like life events just got the better of her and put her in a bad place, and with some help, she did all she could to turn it around.

Ok, I admit, maybe a little too much though from the pictures and clips I have seen of her, she genuinely seems happy and that's what the public should ALSO focus on.

Oh, I wish I'd seen this topic sooner!

It looks like she is looking a little less gaunt.

I think that the makeup and self tanner she used for the big reveal didn't help at all. Brozer blush - hello 1980's.

I have a different perspective on her experience. I used to work with woman bodybuilders in the 90's and I used to see it all the time - that one-day peak where there was no water, no boobies, nothing. (I helped with makeup, routines, and self tanner. I was working as an engineer at the time LOL)

Then one slice of pizza and a beer. Poof.

As I've been getting ready for Spring Break which means that I've been hitting the swimsuit and yoga pant websites, I think that most of the models look about what Rachel looked like for the finale - with water in their system.

I'm also having a hard time imagining myself in those bathing suits and may boycott the pool altogether....

Has anyone accused Sarah Jessica Parker of anorexia? Courtney Cox? Take a good look. They are skinny!

I am getting tired of everything having an instant diagnosis label.

Practically, Rachel only came within a couple of percentage points of losing. I remember last year (I think it was last year) when Kim came in all muscular and fantastic and she lost to a guy who looked like he had just started working out because the game is stacked towards people who start off weighing more.

Rachel, being a smart young woman, took note and worked out 6 hours a day and ate 1600 calories.

She won.

Do we need to imply she's Karen Carpenter? Spread rumors about all swimmers being bulimic? Hope not.

Let's wait and see. I'd like to hear about a recent dr's exam and it would be nice to know the difference in her blood work.

As far as the show is concerned. They'll have to figure out how to recover from this. Lots of bad press.

Funny. It's a show that pays people to lose weight. She lost it. She won.

I guess if I said she looks pretty darn hot that I would spend the weekend in the doghouse.

I don't think she went too far. During that whole Biggest Loser period, the contestants want to win the big prize at the end. So, she most likely put all of her time into doing so. I think as time continues, she will be at a more reasonable weight. I saw an article with her stating she gained fifteen between the big reveal and now.

Hey if I had a chance to win the prize money I would do every step it takes to win. I am sure she won't remain that skinny plus she was dehydrated just like the old wrestling team did before weighing.
