There are still women who do not have marketable job skills. But they have the looks and the body and they don't mind all that much having close personal contact with men. They've learned how to 'schmooze'.

If legalized, medical checkups would be required on a regular basis. Just as truck drivers cannot work without their valid medical card, which must renewed every year (which requires a physical), prostitutes would not be allowed to work without a valid health card. This would help protect not only themselves but also their customers, as well as the location where they do business. Word of mouth spreads quick about places to avoid because of disease, hurting business. So good health would be required.

Some women would get into it to make a fast buck and then get out, while some would keep doing it until their looks fade or they can't pass the health check.

Pimps? If they're smart, they'll go legit. Open their own place, hire their own girls (women) and run it like a business, checking IDs, making sure everyone is of legal age and treating their employees with the respect they deserve.

Ever hear of prostitutes unions? Once it's a legal vocation, unions would not be far behind.

If some oe is selling something then why one can not purchase it.Buying and selling is not illegal so how it should be considered illegal.One thing If this would be legal then it would really be in control of the governements otherwise it can create panic for nation folk.

Buying and selling is not illegal, depending upon what you are buying and selling...

Buying a child is illegal. So is selling one. Same with body parts in many parts of the world.

Buying and selling ivory is illegal in many places because of poachers killing elephants just for their tusks.

Selling ripped DVD's and CD's is illegal because it's a copyright violation, but it's not illegal to buy them or possess them.

Child pornography is illegal no matter if you buy it sell or are in possession of it, for obvious reasons.

But back to prostitution... why is it okay if a person gives it away, but it's not okay when they try to sell it?

What could a cop do if he sees a streetwalker giving it away for free? Arrest her for free love?

I'd like to know how that can be rationalized.

Under exactly what statutes would a cop be able to arrest anyone for giving away free sex?

Keep in mind I'm not saying they are stripping and doing it right there on the sidewalk.

Who cares about what is illegal and what is not, this is a hypothetical debate on the future, not a factual debate on the present. If prostitution were legalized in this country, maybe free sex would be illegal eh?

Free sex will never be illegal. A law banning free sex would be an exercise in futility as it would be impossible to enforce.

'Hypothetical' is beside the point, Atom. There are now and will never be any statutes under which a cop would be able to arrest someone for free sex. They might get them for creating a disturbance if they are standing on the sidewalk holding a sign, or perhaps disturbing the peace, as I would imagine some would be offended by seeing such a thing, but sex is not illegal and neither is giving it away.

Atom, unless you are a virgin, you have paid for sex, perhaps just not with cash. Any man who has a girlfriend, boyfriend or wife pays for sex. Trust me on that one. It doesn't always involve a cash transaction.

Yes, it is currently illegal in most of the United States, and being illegal, the OP asked if it should be illegal or not.

Doesn't matter if the OP had phrased it in the manner you mention or not. Six of one, half a dozen of another...it's illegal and many women suffer because of that.

Perhaps many women would also suffer if it were legal, don't know. The people to ask about that would be those in the profession where it is legal, such as in certain counties in Nevada or in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Prostitution is not technically legal here in Japan, but it's widespread and the police don't bother them. It's all very safe. I don't see any of the problems people predict would occur with the legalization of whoring.
