Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Microsoft on data request disclosures

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...t-disclosures/

Quote:
Court documents unsealed Friday show Google, Yahoo, Facebook, and Microsoft are arguing that government gag orders that stop them from disclosing the number of national security requests they receive violate the companies' First Amendment right to free speech.

Leaks by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden that revealed how the government uses tech firms in its surveillance efforts have damaged their bottom lines and public reputations -- particularly overseas. The companies have begun to push back against some government orders to stay silent.
Thoughts?

My thought is how does the american goverment think it can gag any company that is not american and not operates from american soil?

Dont they understand that this drives business away from the american mainland?

I understand the tradeoff between national security and privacy. There needs to be some sort of checks and balances, because this information is prone to abuse.

I'm sorry to say this and I know that this comment isn't going to win me friends, but one must remember that the rest of the world see the USA as a very paranoid nation and one that uses this sort of thing for illegal (within the EU anyway) snooping.

My thread on this showed this pont, here

Other nations also impose certain restrictions with data companies but Europe is currently fighting the USA as it believes that they are taking things too far.

It is strange looking in from the outside compared to looking at it from an american citizen perspective as we see it as illegal.

The problem is that the US also want to impose their will on other companies operating outside the US. Very bad for business and US to worldwide business relations.
