Sometimes homicide is justified, but that in my opinion doesn't mean it's the best option.
If somebody breaks into my house, I could claim self defense and kill them. Or I could be the bigger person and shoot them in the leg and let them live.
I don't think we can really judge Joe Horn. I've been involved in confrontations, and things escalate easily. Judging somebody from the safety of your armchair isn't the same as facing down two career criminals by yourself.
