Dedicated/Managed server question - finally a place for an

Finally maybe a place for an answer. Since this forum is about dedicated servers I hope someone can answer or guide me in a direction.

I use a ton of bandwidth because of high traffic site about 5 GIGs a day. I have affiliates that use banners from my site also. Right now i have a dedicated with rackfast.com ... I only have one site on this server and only 1 page that has any real graphics (other than the banners being used by affiliates) on a dedicated server and the service is SOOOO slow. Page is timing out at times because it's so slow. Just started with this problem after an "upgrade" to their system and no one seems to care.. they suck. I knew I was in for it when it took 5 days just to set up the account.

Anyhow, changing servers.

This is my question.

I have heard great things about many companies on here but most are not managed. I know web design but nothing about servers. NOTHING.

I hire a lot of freelance work on guru.com and have found many IT guys or gals willing to do freelance server work for a good hourly wage when any service is needed.

The question is how much work is needed on a dedicated unmanaged server. Daily, weekly, monthly? This is where I get lost. If I don't have someone monitoring it daily is this a problem? Can I just hire someone to do updates weekly? monthly?

I hope someone will be kind enough to ad a response because I feel like I am going to go crazy trying to figure out what I need and I need to move companies asap.

I would have someone at the very least drop in on the server daily just to verify things are ok.

We provide managed services for a monthly fee, for customers and non-customers. Many places do this too. This type of managment is a daily thing, checking if its online making sure it stays online, up to date, everything running. This is the best type of managment, if something breaks it gets fixed ASAP. Look for these types of services. When searching.
