Rackshack has lost...yet again.
First Robert Marsh decided to sell one of the most popular and biggest Forums on the net "WebHostingTalk.com", where everyone who's in the business goes for advertising, selling, buying, discussing, you name it..it's there. Robert Marsh sold it, making the announcement that, "there would be no changes, it would still remain with Rackshack/EV1, etc".
HAH! *ahem* (sorry, this just tickles me to death)...

I'm sure some of you if not most of you don't find the humor in this..but those of us who've dealt with Rackshack will indeed find this amusing.

It's been an honor for me personally and RackShack as a company to be a part of WHT. Going forward, RackShack (which will renamed EV1Servers on October 1) will continue offering WHT any and all necessary hosting resources to keep it running as smoothly as it has. EV1Servers will continue to be a major WHT advertiser, and I will continue to be a WHT moderator. In addition, WHT will have the benefit of Ryan's and the iNET team's focus and dedication.

Wonder if he'll still choose to remain a Moderator?

Sorry, QT_, maybe it's because it's been a long mind-numbing day, but this thread has gone completely over my head.
WHT is under iNET, yes?

What QT_ is saying is that WHT's IP resolved to an ip that is run by rackspace not rackshack. Thus rackshack lost the hosting on WHT to rackspace when the head shack himself dropped managment of WHT.
At least thats what I got out of it.

I, Brian..iNET is the owner of WHT, yes. But Rackshack was the hoster, which is what I was referring to...and because of whatever reason, WHT has been moved to a competitor. Which is in a sense humorous to us who've had to deal with Rackshack's ego/theft/abuse.

Ah, I see - so it's a case of thieves sharing the spoils, eh?
Okay - so Rackspace are maybe not theives - but their managed servers are certainly not managed. Semi-dedicated at best. Have them down as misrepresenting their (extortionately priced) services.

I, Brian,
Mind explaining? I've heard that the RackSpace dedicated servers are very "managed" - and I do mean very managed. (They do stuff programmers should be doing.)
Also, dedicated hosting means you aren't sharing the box with anyone, and that's what RackSpace offers - with root access.

I'd like to hear this too...
Rackspace is managed, along with fanatical support. Their prices are high and they're well worth it.

No - when I was searching out managed servers for a friend back around New Year time, I had a look at Rackspace.com. When you really looked at what they offered, it was simply a "semi-managed" service (my bad on the use of ded earlier).
When searching the London site, anyway, they would provide basic hardware support, but like Rackshack, wouldn't touch software. Details are hazy - I did speak to an "online representative" on the London website who stated that they did not run "fully" managed services.
Also saw the topic come in WHT (I was a frrequent poster in those days) - and although everyone with Rackspace.com loved the service but not the prices - it was also pointed out that it was a "semi-managed" service.
To myself, a managed server doesn't need touching by the person who pays for it - the server admin does everything necessary, from kernel upgrades to firewalls to backups.
Sounds like a lot of work - but I'm sure that there are companies out there that offer this service for around $400-$500 month.
Back to my searching for managed server options for my friend - I found there was a general problem in the "managed server" market with the issue of "semi" vs "fully". You really had to look at the company TOU and Service Agreement to see what was precisely offered.
No idea how the market has progressed in the 10 months or so since.

Truthfully I think there is a bit of a grey area when it comes to saying Fulliy managed or Managed or semi-managed.
If your on a "fully managed" hosting platform do you expect the datacenter to do EVERYTHING on the server? Like if you need a new e-mail account created do you expect them to do this aswell as keep your OS up to date, keep your software up to date, keep the network infrastructure up to date, managed your backup solution, etc?
I think there is always going to be a line where the comapny is gonna draw saying X is your responsibilty and Y is ours.

Certainly true - and quite possibly my own comments are well out of date. Not to mention there's always the real danger of my getting confused.
My own impression at the time of Rackspace was definitely a company that offered only "semi-managed" hosting, and that they somewhat misrepresented themselves - at least on the London website - as to what they actually offered at the time of the New Year 2003.
Setting up e-mail accounts is not something I'd expect in "fully managed" - but you're right - there's certainly a variety in the market as to what is offered.
Whenever looking at fully managed options, the Service Level Agreement absolutely has to be studied to determine whether your needs are covered any particular company. The variation is quite surprising.
