RAM usage

I've been having issues lately with RAM being overtaxed and as a result my server seems to go down pretty much every night as of late. I've altered some of my crons to spread out more throughout the day but the RAM usage is still pretty high as is the swap.

My question to those of you on dedicated servers with reasonable amounts of traffic, how much RAM do you have installed on your server?

Thanks.

Well what are you doing with your server, generally database processes take a bit more ram and such. I know for a personal server I have right now. I have 6 GB of RAM, but its only running game servers which tend to not use to much in the RAM department.

Fill us in a little more on whats going on, how much ram you have now

It's actually only 2GB DDR2 ECC running on an 8400 Dual Core Server which should be more than powerful enough for 10'ish sites utilizing under 100GB/month data transfer.

Since posting this however we've learned that one of our vBulletin installs (more accurately, VBSEO) was eating up close to 50% of the server resources. This would only make sense maybe during the time VBSEO was generating the sitemap but 24 x 7 makes no sense at all.

We've made some schedule changes to the way the vB install is running but are hoping that an upgrade to current version of vB/VBSEO take care of the problem.

Incidentally, all sites are now running offset crons via vBACP as we thought vB's default cron settings may have been jamming things up but that appears to not have had any affect at all.

With high amounts of DB querys it does tend to eat more RAM. I would suggest upgrading to atleast 4 GB of RAM, and that would more than likely help fix the issues.

I think that's the road we're headed down.

Thanks for your help.

As it turns out it's a problem with VBSEO on my friends site that happens to be eating up just over 50% of system resources. An upgrade to the latest version of VBSEO seemed to help his site a bit but not that much overall.

I too have VBSEO installed on my board and haven't experienced any issues however my site has a portion of his sites membership. What seems odd though is his site has less traffic overall than mine so why VBSEO is taking up so many resources is still somewhat of a mystery? The only major difference between our two sites is my main pages are all built from Joomla where his are integrated into vBulletin via vB Advanced.

So maybe that just right time to move to the new server? You have grown and now you need something bigger

I'm already using a dedicated E8400 with 1.5TB/month available bandwidth. If I really need to upgrade to something bigger and more expensive for a handful of sites then I'd much rather sell off my sites and do something else with my money.

I do believe that more RAM will fix the issue which I'll definitely do, my problem is I don't like digging in my wallet when issues arise, I like to identify and fix the issues first and then dig in my pockets only if necessary.
