How do we know if its a dedicated server or just a virtual server

How do we know if a dedicated server which we get from a hosting company really is a dedicated sever and not just some virtual server?

If you have cPanel you can simply login and check whether it's showing the VPS or dedicated logo (check the filename; it's different if it's a VPS)

There are also some commands which only work with a dedicated server, although I can't recall them right now (will edit if I can).

Here's a really simple ghetto way to do it: http://www.robtex.com/ip/

Type in the IP of your server and see how many other sites show up.

A VPS would have a different IP address for each node, though?

What is you are on the dedicated IP?

I see only my sites when I type the IP in the robtex.com. But then, there can be multiple IPs assigned to the same machine isin't it? Like in my case, I have 5 different IPs assigned to my server.

So can we find out if there any other IPs being used by the same machine?

The hardware reported by the operating system would not match up. As I understand it it would be very difficult to fake the information 100%. Not impossible, but not easy either.
