FTP Backups

Do all decent dedicated server providers offer FTP Backups on their servers?
I ask as hostingsource.com has that on their dedis.
What about yours?

The "decency" of a hosting provider doesn't depend on whether or not they offer FTP backups. It depends on individual requirements and how well the hosting provider is able to satisfy those requirements.

For backups, you need to consider the amount of DATA and the frequency required (daily incremental, weekly full, etc...). For me, FTP would not work because I have hundreds of sites and terabytes worth of data. IMHO, FTP backups are on the low-end, especially in setups where the repositories are remote (restoration would take way too long.)

Take for instance the following hosting providers:
IBM = Tivoli Storage Manager
ThePlanet = DiskSync Tape Archive

Some clients want ftp backup, others prefer RAID or something else. It really depends on what the monthly price point is. Most good dedicated server providers will offer some form of backup for their clients.

It depends on the type of dedicated server. Most fully managed providers will offer backup space, but I wouldn't imagine many unmanaged providers would.

RAID isn't a back-up service. It's for hard drive redundancy. RAID is not a substitute for backups

What'd happen if, say, a DC had an explosion and all its power got knocked out for a few hours? RAID wouldn't help then. But backups would

(This is a realistic scenario; it happened to one of The Planet's DC's a couple of years ago)

In this way you will keep all eggs in the same basket. That is not recommended

yes, but if all the power was knocked out and the backup was in the same DC you wouldn't be able to retrieve it. RAID can be used as alternative or in addition to ftp backups. It is a level of data protection and any level of data protection is better than none at all.

Want to say that hostingsource.com has provided many resources on their dedicated servers, which are self-managed.
Their prices are not high.
50%Discount is the coupon on their servers.

I partially agree. But RAID is for data redundancy, not backups. That's why FTP backups aren't too great for backups either (for a professional host or company) since, as you say, a DC major downtime would lose you access to the local back-ups too.

RAID and external backups is best for data redundancy and real backups, IMO.
