Exclamation Looking for "cheap" server - 1and1.com? - Any good, guys?

Hey Guys,

I'm now using between 80-100GB BW per day and it's expected to increase with the rate of growth one of my sites is at.

I am looking for the cheapest dedicated server with as much bandwidth as possible.

I just need a downtime guarantee, 30gb space, don't give a damn about processor speeds I just want VERY HIGH BANDWIDTH.

I saw 1and1.com - unmanaged root servers - the $69.99 deal seems pretty good, what does anyone have to say about them? heard about them? Do you know any "cheaper" but "reliable" hosts?

I will ONLY be hosting files on this new server, not websites ... so high bandwidth is all I need.

Thanks.

No, 1&1 are not good, they suck, stay away. It is a pain to cancel your account with them too, they need you to fax off a form and stuff. And all their support staff are Indian and can't spell in emails.

Zain,

one, Do you know how to manage a dedicated server?, its a task in its own

two, when you start using bandwidth, its from hits, and when a server has to process these hits, thats when the processor and memory come into the equation. Finding a dedicated server is a start, finding it on a good network is another.

If you are set on finding a dedicated server search the webhostingtalk.com forums for a provider, but I would rather you get a high end reseller account in the long run costs are a lot lower

also 80 to 100gb a day is close to 3 terabytes of bandwidth a month, its going to be hard to find a provider giving you that much bandwidth for anything lower then $100 - $150 a month (and that will be laggy networks), if you really need a dedicated I suggest you also look into a dedicated 10 mbit connection with it. Thats about 3 terabytes of month.

Ok, thanks ... I'm only interested in hosting files from it really, I have 1.2TB BW on my current server already so I'm looking to just even out on an extra server (or two - god forbid!)

In regards to managing a server, Would I still need to manage a server if I am just going to ftp upload a bunch of files to it?

Hell yeah Pimp ... but it's not optimised as well as they could be - that's down to equipment costing a lot of $$$ which we don't really wish to splash out on.

Have you used them before? Was it for a root/dedicated server? I use them as a backup dedicated server and have NOT had any downtime in two years, support has been terrific (not in india) but this could be based on the time of day that you call. Most big companies use various locations based on time of day (US time). Off time usually is outsourced or high volume times are outsourced out of the US. To be honest if you are running a root or dedicated server "YOU" are the support team because you are running your own server.

I know quite a few people using 1&1 and you are the first person I've heard to complain about them. I'm sure there's others because no one will have 100% customer satisfaction. Based on my personal experience with them and some of my clients, I would recommend them. I like that they send me an automatic invoice with a list of all my sites on each dedicated server and the amount of bandwidth used on each site. I can get the same info using webtrends but this is a quick snapshot without having to view various reports online.

one thing you have to keep in mind, is that when you deal with bigger companies they have divisions that ddeal with each business

Ah, I C. Yah, videos are harder to optimize but you can still do it cheaper. Tell the people to save them in lower quality as well. You could probably cut off 5-15MB on each video and it'll still look pretty good. There was a program I used to just resave in lower quality but forgot what it was.

But think about it. 10 MB per video per download would save a TON in the long run. Lets assume 1 GB = 1000 MB. So 80 GB = 80000 MB. Each video you have now is about 80 MB. 80000/80 = 1000. 1000*10 = 10000. You'd be saving 10 GB per day. That's 300GB per month.

Oh an just another idea. Why don't you make people pay to get the downloads section? That way subscribers can help pay for bandwidth...

It wouldn't be illegal to have a subscription type thing? They're just paying to have access to a deeper section. They're not actually paying for the videos....

Not illegal if it's unique content that you produced or owned. But it would be illegal if you are selling unauthorized videos/photos without the artist's or management team's permission or if you have an exclusive download area. It's even a fine line allowing free downloads due to copyright restrictions. Based on all the threads I've read in the last year in this case it would be. I know quite a few people that have been sued for having music videos on their website. They were not trying to make a profit they were just hardcore fans trying to show their appreciation to the various artists.

Bottom line, pay royalties to the artist and you can pretty much do whatever you want. Don't pay them and they will eventually shut you down. I would also assume that most of the people visiting the site are probably too young to be willing to pay for an exclusive area even if it was legally available considering you can get it at her authorized web site already.

Anyways hope you find what you are looking for, zain.

try http://www.hivelocity.net/Plans/Dedi...unmetered1.asp
they have an unmetered 10mbps (to 3200gb) speeds are nice and the support is fantastic. $79 a month and i always transfer out 80gb+ per day,everyday...
prices are coming way down and speeds seem to be going way up so cool...
i myself am looking for a little faster speed as in 100mbit unmtered if i can find it reasonable.

As continue to the discussion. I can share my expierence with 1and1.com
I have 2 accounts and 5 sites with higher bandwidth hosted on 1and1 from last 4 months. I never have had a downtime or any issue.
I can't comment about their support because I never used it.

There are two worst things with 1and1
a). They only provide hosting solutions for US, Canada & UK residents
b). They have their own control panel which has pretty nice functions but a little bit slow.

1and1.com

I would not recommend 1and1 for the following reasons:
1) Their terms are horrible especially with the promotional packages
2) Tranferring domain names and websites to other companies is painful
3) If you cancel a domain purchased via a promotion before the term is up, you forfeit your ownership of the domain.

With any company, there's never 100% satisfaction and if the company claims this; then you should definitely avoid them.

Websites will always have downtime; it's inevitable because there are always factors beyond the webhosting company's control.

Just my two cents based on my experiences with 1and1.com (and I use many webhosting companies throughout the world).
