My home connection is as good as a basic server on FastHosts. I could certainly run a webserver from home but its far better to use a dedicated server on the web with backup generators etc.
Windows IIS or Linux Apache can do the job, obviously 1 is free the other is extorsionate. Depending on the code you use on the site you have to use one or the other, setting up a home server isnt terribly difficult. If you have a linux machine you can just install Webmin or another free control panel and off you go. If you have Windows its not quite so easy...
The information you need is out there, its probably best you setup a test site first to see how well your home connection does with 1 website before you move them all over.
