Supported OS: Windows/MAC/Linux

I suggest linux, because it tends to be the cheapest (if you plan buying a VPS/Dedicated server)

Needs a good processor and ram. 1GB ram is minimum to run it somewhat decent

For server software (that runs minecraft) I suggest bukkit

Here's a tutorial how to set up bukkit
Code:

Ideally, SSDs, RAID-10 and lots and lots of RAM if you want a good server.

It really depends on your exact slot requirements and what type of setup you have. A server with RAID 10 SSDs may actually be necessary.

The Intel E3-12xx series work very well for Minecraft servers due to the higher clock speeds.

Definitely a decent amount of RAM because Minecraft is a very memory heavy game.

For drives its really is up to your budget and how fast you want maps/chunks to load. SSD would be the fastest option but also the most costly per GB, next would be to use SAS 10k/15k RPM Drives and SATA drives being the slowest of the bunch but also the cheapest.

It's always better to start from a Linux server.

Go to a few hosting review sites and read what people have said, there is a high chance that a host has written positive things about himself so you are looking for negative reviews because those will tell you the truth.
