accessing apache virtual host with no domain

I just got a dedicated server running RedHat Linux.

I want to migrate a site from an old shared server to this one so I want to upload all the files to this new server before I change the nameservers on the domain so we have minimal downtime.

Anyone know how I can do this?

I am running Mac OSX Tiger, I believe this might be possible by editing my /etc/host file, if anyone can help me with this, I would be grateful

Open your /etc/hosts file with a text editor, make sure that you have write permissions on the file... then add the line:

WW.XX.YY.ZZ    www.mydomainurl.com

where WW.XX.YY.ZZ is the IP address of the server.

thanks for the reply, I have tried this and it doesnt seem to work!

edit: it did work, I was trying www.domain.com instead of domain.com, thanks!
