Moving from VPS to Dedicated

I've got 2 VPSs - both are "Power-2" from PowerVPS.

My business partner wants to move to a dedicated server... a 2 GHz Celeron, with 2 x 80 GB drives, 1 GB of RAM and RHE (the 2nd one on this page: http://www.ev1servers.net/Dedicated/...s/Celeron.aspx)

So...

1. Will I see an increase or decreae in performance? One of my VPS uses about half of it's available resources, the only not more than a third.
2. Both VPSs are cPanel/WHM. Each one is a seperate web hosting company, let's call them company A and company B. What would be the best way to set up the new server? Make Company A the "primary" and have company B (which has much fewer clients) a reseller of company A? Or merge the two of them into one company?
3. On each VPS there's a "primary" account, which is the hosting company's domain. One of these will be the "primary" account on the new server. On the VPSs, each client uses name servers from the primary account (ns1.companya.com, for example). What would be the best way to move these account without causing too much of an issue for the clients? Should I create another "umbrella" domain, use that one as the primary account for the new server and have all the clients use that domain once they're moved?

Any suggestions for making this as painless as possible would be appreciated.

In most cases, moving from a VPS to a dedicated server raises costs with minimal benefits. Trust me, I have had a dedicated server since '98.

You may see an increase in performance. That depends upon what hardware the two VPS boxes were built upon. If they were also 2 GHz Celerons with 1GB of RAM, you will see a performance improvement. But if they were Sun E10K's...

For me, what worked best was to create an almost meaningless holding company and then put all of my web projects under that company. Then, even if I sell off a project (web site, sub-company, whatever), my main operations do not need to be reorganized.

The VPS is on a server that has 2 x Opteron 248's (2 GHz), I think.

We've decided to go with a 2.4 GHz P4 instead of the Celeron, that should make a difference in performance. We've also decided to make one of our unused domain names the "primary" domain on the server, each of the hosting companies will be resellers on the server.

Remember, it's in your datacenter's financial best interest to "upgrade" you from a VPS to a dedicated server... they want to keep you as their customer rather than going to another provider, and your upgrade would bring in additional revenue for them.

Accordingly, don't be afraid to use them for all of the expertise they can provide! Contact them, and ask to get a rough idea of how the resource usage of your VPS compares to other customers' accounts on the same physical server.
