Thanks for the replies.

Just a thought here. ... I'm sure you know that most people in the webmaster community hate rippers. I've had a few of my sites ripped, and it boils my blood. So, it might be a good idea to not be so friendly with this Gavin Hanson guy. You know, the "guilt by association" thing that happens. Just mentioning it because it looks like you're cozy with the guy over on webmasters-market.com

Cheers

I definately know that most people hate rippers, especially me. I've had more than a handfull of sites ripped. As for being friendly with Gavin, trust me, we are not anymore. I'll have to talk to my partner and have Gavin removed from that site, as I hardly ever visit it.

If you're looking for some samples of my work (thought you might be interested since you run a handful of sites yourself), then feel free to browse the list. All of these I've helped out with, and I currently operate Starcraft.org and am working on a redesign for it. We're number #1 hit on google out of 1.7 million for the keyword Starcraft, probably because of the domain. I don't know much about SEO stuff though, so I could be wrong.

Overselling is like overbooking on an airline; most of the time it's ok, but if everybody actually shows up for a given flight, somebody gets bumped.
This is why a respectable hosts dont oversell. If your clients buy a service and they all acutally use what they paid for and the company cant provide what was paid for because the box they put them on was oversold then who loses in the end? The client. Who do compaines need to stay in business? The client.

I happen to disagree with you. I know many respectable hosts who oversell.

To really make this a useful discussion, I think we should be talking specifics.

Bandwidth Overselling

Bandwidth overselling is quite common. Most of the servers we have are with ServerBeach, and they come with anywhere from 450GB per month to 900GB per month. With the V1 plan, we allow 50GB transfer, so it wouldn't take that many people using all their bandwidth to put us over that. But, most clients don't use anywhere near 50GB per month. And even if we did go over the 450GB per month, we would just buy more bandwidth, so there's no problem there.

In fact, we have one customer who is going over his bandwidth limit. So far this month, he's used 92.3GB of bandwidth. He asked about it, and I told him not to worry about it. Why should I charge him extra for bandwidth when I'm not paying extra for it?

Disc Space Overselling

Some hosts - many hosts in fact - overselling disc space. This is wrong, IMO. One host I just saw was offering a 2GB special. And I'm pretty sure he's overselling disc space when he puts a couple hundred clients on a server from EV1 with a 60GB HD.

If people start using all that space, he'll have to get another server and move some of his clients. No big deal there. Just a little inconvenient.

System Resources Overselling

This is the real problem. Ever notice how many EV1 servers are under 1GB of RAM? Some of those servers I wouldn't trust with one busy site, much less 2,000. But you have these get-rich-quick type people trying to put 2,000 websites on one server.

iPowerWeb did this. When we used iPowerWeb for some sites, including the old webmaster forum, and server time-outs were a daily issue. LunarPages does it too. Same thing - you get a bunch of traffic and the server goes down.

It's greed. They want to host as many sites as possible on one server. And then if a client actually uses the system resources, they ask him to leave. One guy who signed up for hosting at V7 the day before yesterday was on iPowerWeb, and LunarPages before that. They asked him to leave because he was using system resources.

It happened to me before, too, before I got into the hosting business. It sucks. They promise you this that and the other thing, and then when DNS resolves and they see you getting a ton of traffic, they suspend your site, refund your money and tell you to go elsewhere.

iPowerWeb and Lunarpages oversell? Take a look at powweb. 150 GB of transfer per month for $7.77? Seems a bit crazy to me =\ My old roommate hosted with them and hated it.

Very odd and confusing thread over at WHT. Looking like darkstarllc was using somebody else's design and claiming to be a co-founder of EV1. :

Somebody enlighten me.
heh I didnt even notice this until now... Actually it was a HUGE misunderstanding, one of the guys who had a reseller account under me claimed to own or be co owner of ev1servers which of course was not true. That thread cost him his business and hosting with us, now he is hosted with www.zykotic-servers.net or something.

Just to clear things up We are and never were directly affiliated with ICThost they simply dealt with us on business terms.

Geeze... I seriously do need to keep up on this forum. John Gavin Hanson aka ICThost was actually removed from those forums, accounts were NOT deleted though Just a simply ban on his emails and his two names.
