Trailing slash in Apache

My understanding is that Apache by default requires the trailing slash for folders, because without the trailing slash it looks for a file.

Is there any way to modify this?

It's a little more complicated that that...
If you leave off the /, then Apache goes through a different routine to canonicalize the URL. there really isnt a way to get around that. If you let me know what you're trying to do and what results you're expecting, I'll see if I can simplify the task for you.
