New WesternDigit 80GB HD wouldn't work on a PII 400

I have a PII 400 with 128MB ram pc home. The pc comes with a 4.8GB HD, it is really small since I am going to install XP on this machine.

Therefore, I bought a brand new 80GB WesternDigit for this machine. The computer hangs and wouldn't boot after I connected 80GB.

I set the jumper to Single or Master on the 80GB, it still doesn't work.

The 80GB HD works fine with my Dell P4 and my PII 400 works fine with my old SeaGate 4.8GB HD.

Can someone help?

DOnt know why you posted this in the Dedicated server forum.

But anyrate, its no suprise that a PII machine does not reconize an 80gb hard drive. First thing. Look to the manufactuer of the computer/motherboard for a bios update that might allow it to reconize larger size disks. Remember when the PII's where out in mass the largest drives that where around where less than 10gb.

If a bios update is unavailable or does not go as far as supporting an 80gig disk then look at the software that came with your disk. if you got an OEM drive that did not come with a cd or floppy then go to that drives website and look for some drive managment software. You can use this to install a secondary bios that will basicly be the intermediary between the large disk and the computer.
