Ideal Server Setup

What would be an ideal server setup, to guard against data loss? Say for v7n, where new posts are being added every minute, some kind of mirroring?

Just a note here - I do not like server backups that FTP a backup of the data to a remote server. It causes a load on the server when there are gigs and gigs of data.

raid10 with hot-swap. For backup, can do 2 levels
- on the same server: get an extra disk for it
- off-site: can use rsync to move backup files to another server. It doesnt take too much resources. Or CDP solution from R1soft

You need to first define what you are thinking about when you say data loss. The RAID soultion or continious replication would be a solution to prevent data loss from a hardware failure but if your talking about data loss from the stand point of hacking or just careless deletion of files that would not be effective

That is a concern. From the standpoint of hacking, what is best?

cannot say what the best is in that case. Beside firewall, IDS, etc you will need a skillful admin to manage your servers. Each OS has strong points. Meanwhile I prefer *nix, I cannot say Windows is worst. By default, *nix seems better in security than Windows, but a good admin will know how to do. Of course, setup a good schedule for backup will help in case data lost.

RAID 10 to prevent HD failure causing data loss and keeping it fast.

And FTP backup can be slow unless you have the backup next to your main server and they both use Gigabit ethernet cards and are connected to each ohter directly.

RAID2 is definitely the way to go for faster data access. However, to have an effective backup of your data, you may want to consider a second server, and connect a 1000Mbps LAN connection to the mainframe. The second server will solely be tasked on backing up the mainframe data using rsync. That will save a lot of CPU resources than using FTP.
