Question Server Backup

I was wondering how other people keep their data safe. Is there a often used and simple way to keep your files safe. I'm currently the owner of a virtual server (shared server, own ip). I backup my database every hour using a cronjob, but the files are not really safe. If the hard-disk of my provider crashes, I can only hope he has backups... Not so terrible, as I'm still in beta-phase and the amount of data I need to save is not that vast yet.

I'm considering getting another virtual-server installing SVN or CVS to synchronise the data (hourly or daily, depending on the data), resulting in a real backup. Sounds pretty good to me, but I was wondering if there are more sophisticated methods being used.

Any advice?

If you have RAID 1, backups on same server is most probably enough. Or for extra security, you can have a cron to ftp the backups to another server on a daily basis.

bqbackup.com is a good option if you want rsync backup. In fact, it's good enough when you're small (in your case, you're on a VPS only, right?)

Another option for someone larger: CDP solution from R1soft. It's pretty good. Just attended the webinar yesterday, and I think we will launch it soon. Its solution is sector-based, and you can create many recover points.

Set up FTP back to send the files to your home computer... then from there you can burn those files on a DVD/CD and store them away from your home.

You now have the data stored:

1. On the server.
2. Home PC
3. On DVD/CD off-site.

You should be fine.

Thanks for all your suggestions, will definitely give them further thought. I just don't want to have to worry about the data. Restoring the whole stuff could be a real pain. bqbackup.com does look rather interesting to me as it would reduce my work.

As for me I use the 3-rd part for it. I mean I pay the other company for backing up my files.

Hello marc_gfx,

To keep your data safe, secure and always on the safer side, I will suggest you to use remote backup methods like Rysnc which is the best backup software tool used for mirroring web sites. There are backup plans provider, you can check out with search engines.

Please let me know if you have any more queries in this regards, I will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

There is also RAID5 which I believe is a much better solutions than just RAID1. RAID5 with 4 drives will give you more capacity vs. RAID1 with 4 drives.
