What kind of connection are you running them from?
And what sites are hosted on them?
(Sorry for all the questions ;-) )

A server is worthless without the connection to the internet. So even with a free server your looking at $$$ to get a good conection to the internet. DSL or cable modem will not support a high traffic web site. I have 3 at home 2 redhat boxes and 1 spark running solaris, all 3 are worthless for any real internet work as I have only a cable modem for my internet.

Damn, i would love to have a server in my room. Don't know if it would fit. One of these days i have to post pics of my dorm room. Its so great!
only good thing is i got a kick ass connection! But it does shut off for study hall and stuff, so wouldn't be good for a server. Having the site shut off for a few hours would not be good

How much did mine cost? Well Im not sure since I bult them both myself.
I would not classify either as being a power server but these are the specs. remember I built them over a year and half ago so they are not the fastest hardward but serve my purposes.
Server1
Duron 750Mhz
384MB SDRAM
1 80GB HD (had two in a mirror raid config but one died)
Redhat 7.3
Apache
Mysql
Postfix
Samba
FTP
SSH
Server2
T'bird 1.0Ghz overclocked to 1.1Ghz
512MB SDRAM
2 40GB HD's
Redhat 9
Apache
Mysql
Sendmail
Samba
FTP
SSH
I am going to migrate most of the items I am using server1 for over to be on server2 at some point. The services I have listed on the servers are the major ones running as there are several less major items that each is doing. For example server2 is now automated to do a full backup of my main website thats hosted at QWH on an every other day schedule. Server1 also compiles my stats for my sites that run on QWH since awstats was suspended on server1.QWH
I have a 768KB up/down connection to my DSL provider. I have a constant IP with them so I dont have to worry about my IP constatly changing. I use zoneedit.com for my DNS services
I mostly use the servers for working on my websites in a 'controled' enviorment where if I mess something up I dont have to worry about it affecting the live site. I also run my personal website off of that server aswell as my personal e-mail address.
You really dont need a T1 to your house unless your hosting a website with alot of traffic. For example I use dto run www.aquariumadvice.com from my home up until Nov 02. At that point we had on average 5-10 people online at any given time and it really slowed the website down because of my limited internet speed. For a site that has maybe 1-5 people on at any given time a conenction slower than a T1 is fine unless your doing some kind of multimedia streaming.

Is it a rack based or desktop type server you might win - I assume desktop? Whats the specs out of interest?
You can certainly run one from your bedroom although I've not personally done it. Most people I know either plug it into their DSL connection or cable Internet, some via a firewall of some kind.
What are you planning to do with the machine? If it's commercial then you really need to think about a properly hosted data centre based one, but if it's just a dev. machine your bedroom should be fine.

Server load of 1.50 - hardly wake the machine up....you need to run a few nasty loops. How about server load of 120?

Thats the RH9 box. The RH 7.3 box is equivlent to that except its got 1 80GB drive and a 750Mhz Duron and 384MB Ram and a stock CDRom.
What do I use them for? Working on my websites in a local enviorment. This way I can easily edit my files from my windows machine using a samba network file share. Basicly I can open a file, make a tweak, save the file, alt+tab to the webbrowser pointed at the internal website and hit refresh. If I dont like it I repeat till I have what I want. Once everything is how I like it I upload the changed files to the live webserver (if its one of my busy websites) if its a website that is local on that box that is serving up something then i dont have to FTP anything.
Nothing commercial will be run from the box. Im sure my ISP would not like me selling services using my residental connection. They would probably want me to pay for the equivlent business account thats like 5X more per month.
