How does this relate to web directories?
I think www.no-ip.com is one and www.dynip.com is one also. I suggest doing a search on Google for dynamic ip or something along those lines to see a full list of services.

I doubt your ISP would allow you to run a server on your cable connection. I work for a cable ISP... your server would probably be slow because of a low upload speed on the modem, assuming it would even work (or if it did, until you get caught and shut off).

Here's my blunt response: If you are asking this question you shouldn't be doing it. Having a web server connected to the internet is a serious responsibility, not just to yourself and the websites you host (which I don't really care about) but the whole internet community (which I do care about). If you don't know the basics, you are a very long way from having the skills to accept this responsibility.
I accept that you are asking for help, but this information is freely available with a simple search.
You need to research. A lot.

If you are doing it for "Fun" no problem but I would not buy hosting off anyone that has it "in house" on their broad band connection. Just a very bad idea and will fade out and never take off.

Sorry but I have to disagree. People doing it for fun are a huge part of the problem as they often don't appreciate the responsibility they have to the wider internet community.
If you are going to connect a server to the internet you need to know what you're doing. No exceptions, no excuses.

Nopes. I have to disagree with you dave. Experimenting is the best way to learn. As long as he is causing no harm to others, I don't see why he shouldn't go ahead with his plans.
Your thinking that if he has to ask questions, he shouldn't be doing it is, well, to be questioned.
You are saying something similiar to : You'll get a job only if you have work experience, while forgetting that he needs to get a job in the first place to get any experience.

But that's just it... just by doing that, he's causing harm to others... I have to deal with stupid kids who are trying to set up servers (mainly for gaming) all the time... we get 1000's of complaints for slow speed for regular customers thanks to these people who have no idea what they're doing and are sucking bandwidth from everyone around them...

I may eventually set up a server from my home.. heh. I'm making sure I do my research before I do it though.. and I'm not even positive whether or not I'm going to do it yet.
Anyways, mines just gonna be for my stuff... maybe stuff for a couple friends, if it works... and if I do it. lol

One of the thing I noticed was all of you are assuming that he is asking about this to run a hosting business. Perhaps it could be to host his own personal site and to get the hang of hosting.
I agree that he can run into trouble with his limited expereince if he starts a hosting company with dsl or cable connection, but heck, I still say its the customers job to research any company before entering into a deal with them.
As far as what you say about 'sucking bandwidth', well isn't that more of a prob of the technology (internet connection through cable)? I ask this out of curiosity and unawareness ...
Also, lets look at it realistically ... Whatever you say, these guys are still gonna go ahead ... young minds are always curious ... I would suggest that you guys, instead of trying to dissuade them, guide them to the right materials, so that they can do less harm ...

For experience, set up and run a server on a LAN. That's what we did - for six months before we even thought about connecting to the internet.
To be honest, this person doesn't even seem to be at that level. It's nothing personal but when some asks "what programme i need to use to host web sites" you've gotta be concerned.
And I didn't assume anything.

I Do know
I started this TOLL. And yes i do know what i am doing. I can set up an internet site and yes i can put it into IIS but the problem i have got is that i am running a LAN and could not work out how to forward the relevent ports to the server.
I have know got it running after speaking to a friend who i know. He works for microsoft and i have given him remote privliges to my server.
The other problem i was trying to work out is that i want peoples web site (When i open it to the public, but i am waiting for a good internet connection) to look at active directry and the to look at Microsoft Exchange server which will then give them an exchange e-mail account which i can then give them Remote outlook access. Then with active dir being in use i can controll the ammount of users who have access to the FTP. I am in the learning stages but i know enogh to get my self started. I will not be causing any harm
THANKS

Scott, please don't take any of this personally. When you've seen as much grief as I have caused by well-meaning people who thought they knew enough to be safe, you might forgive me for being blunt.
It does seem hard to swallow when you say you know what you're doing, but in the same breath you say you don't know how to forward the relevent ports to the server. Still, I'm not a Windows guy so maybe it's much harder to set this sort of thing up in Windows.
Anyway, it sounds like you have a plan to get this happening. It takes a lot of time as I'm sure you realise. Getting your friend involved sounds like a good idea.
I would simply encourage you to take it very slowly and be patient. And when you're ready, you can feel safe and have fun at the same time. Good luck.

You're very lucky - you've got your whole life to have fun with this. Spend time getting it right and you'll have a blast. I'm sure you'll do well.
Old buggers like me didn't get to get to do this until our thirties
One other thing... if I were you I'd be looking at Linux as well. I know it's time -consuming and not easy if you don't have a spare computer lying around, but I think it's worth it. Even if you choose to stay with Windows, an understanding of other popular systems will stand you in good stead for the future.
Good luck.
