What would I need to run a dedicated server

I am looking into purchasing a dedicated server from somebody like www.serverbeach.com in the fairly near future.

I was just wondering what I'd need to run this in terms of knowledge, and how hard doing it would be.

Well you should have a good working knowlege of what ever server OS you pick. Debian, RedHat, or Windows. Once you have your OS picked out then you should decide if you want a control panel or not and if so what one.

Ok, I probably want to run it on RedHat 9, so I am going to try and get a copy installed of that on my PC, and play around with that for a couple of months. If I do use this I'll probably use CPanel, seeing as I use it on all my sites atm.

Sounds like a good plan. I think learning the OS inside and out is the best thing you can do. Set up a bunch of user accounts, install scripts in them, get some email going... stuff like that.

CPanel is good (or at least convenient), but make sure you also get comfortable working from the command prompt.

Have fun

What bandwidth do you need to get a server up and running to its fullest? Can it be done on a home cable line?

You would need a dedicated IP, you would need a half way decent upstream. Most cable connections are capped at 128KB up. That sucks for servers since 99% of their bandwidth is used in the upstream. You would need a DNS service to point your domain to your ip.

I would not suggest RH9 since RH is dropping updates for it at the end of this month. Learn Fedora or RH Enterprise instead.

Yeah Fedora looks pretty good. Problem is on my connection, these downloads are taking a long time, and I keep getting 530 login incorrect when trying to download it from the ftp server now. (previous download failed). This is RH9 which I'm talking about, as I am going to download it anyway and stick it on a disk.
