Which server is the best ? need your advice
Hello
hello my current hoster is changing his location and just now he suggest me few servers for choice
1. AMD XP2400
ram: 512
HD 40GB
bandwidth: 2000GB
port: 100 mbit
with Directadmin
2. AMD Sempron 2400
1GbRAM
80Gb HDD
3000Gb transfer
10mbps network
Located in New Jersey, US
3. AMD Athlon 64 3400+
512MB RAM
120GB HDD
2 IP Addresses
10Mbit Bandwidth
3000Gb traffic
4. Intel Pentium 4 2.4ghz
1GB ram
120GB hard drive
500GB transfer
100mbit port
CentOS 5
1 IP
all of this servers have ~ the same price.
First of all, for what is this server. I run few scripts which grab rss feeds, analize and convert this information.
So , thats' why the most important for me is
a) RAM
b) Bandwidht
c) space
d) processor
The only think that i don't know, is there any big difference between 10Mbit and 100 mbit ? is it so important ?
That's why i don;t know , which one to choose?
Any advice will be appreciated :-)
P.s. btw is
bandwidth: 2000GB
port: 100 mbit
is more than
10Mbit Bandwidth
3000Gb traffic
???
on another forum, it was told me, that first opt have more opt than the second one

Personally i would go for the P4 box, from what it seems it will be used for, this server will best suit your needs. Some will debate the quality of AMD over Pentium, but i have always prefered pentium servers.

10mbit can physically transfer 1.2MB/s while 100mbit can physically transfer ~11MB/s. It all depends on how fast and how much information you need to send/receive.
In regards to the server, I would choose the Athlon64.

It really depends on your site's processes and backend requirements I guess.

I believe that your problem for now is price, isn't it?

This thread is a bit old and so I think the OP should have made the decision already.
However if still want to compare the CPU power of different server,
go to this link cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
and look at the comparison.
eg. the benchmark for p4 2.4 is 354, and that for athlon 3400+ is 473,
so purely from cpu aspect the athlon is 30% faster, although you'd probably want
to have bigger ram than 512mb.

I thin that we have to chose the server for our needs, not the one we like the most

I agree. But at the same time, we have to look at reliability, cost and their customer support. I think cost is particularly important as dedicated servers are usually expensive.

The best one is the second one, I'll explain:
The first one stands for a 100Mpbs PORT, which means you'll get the speed up to 100Mpbs and a limited amount of bandwidth.
The second one on the other hand means that you can use the bandwidth of a 10Mbps connection, this is between 3-4TB monthly. Your connection will still run on a 100Mpbs port (burstable to), but this depends on your webhost. This is also called "unmetered" bandwidth by many webhosts, don't take "unmetered" for "unlimited" though, they are total different terms.
The first one always comes with bandwidth much less then a 10Mpbs unmetered connection, therefor the second one is better but also costs a bit more.

If you are planig to use 2000-3000GB do not go for the 10Mbit port as it will simply slow things down in bandwidth peaks. 10Mbit port means 3.6TB transfer per month. Option 1 comes with 512 RAM which is not recommended and the 4th one with the 100Mbit port comes with only 500GB bandwidth so not recommended (100Mbit port is no use if you only have 500GB bandwidth) so you'll be left with the option 2.
P4 and the AMD Sempron 2400 have similar performance.

120GB hard drive
500GB transfer
100mbit port
CentOS 5

I also suggest to look at serverproto which offers quite good packages. Their packages are the lowest priced I come across. But you got to look for reviews on them.

The first one ids more interesting looking. And I agree with other posters here: have a look at other companies as well: globaltap.com (good and quality servers).
And there is might be a variant that you need VPS not dedicated. I think that you first of have to specify your needs for yourseldа and then try to understand what solution would be best for you.
Good luck.
