Need help

Hello everyone!

I am new to designing and maintaining websites. In the last couple of months I have been studying XHTML and CSS 2 and have become proficient in making basic websites using those languages. I have also been studying SEO techniques so I will be ready to promote my websites when they become operational. I have a few questions about proceeding onto the next step.

Few things about what I plan to do:
I have decided to create my own custom proxy network with some custom features that others don't offer (too many ideas in my head. must put them in motion ). That network will mostly rely on repeat users that care about anonymity rather then switching domains every day to avoid being blocked.
I also plan to rent a server from esecuredata.com and run my websites on a Linux server. I just recently installed Ubuntu on one of my desktops, so that is the extent of my knowledge of Linux.
I don't plan on creating and offering my websites for the next 6 to 12 months.

1. What language should I learn next? Javascript, PHP, AJAX?

2. What do I need to manage my own Linux server? I know that sounds like a stupid question, but I would rather know now if I can do it myself rather then loose money later.

3. What marketing strategy books do you recommend?

4. Any other advice is also appreciated.

I think that all of them, because they can be used in different pars of your project.

.NET developers get paid more.

When we look at the options you posted about what to learn first, being a webhost 75% of the tickets we get or relating to php coding, less than 2% about java.

I'd recommend learning "web 2.0" technologies like javascript and AJAX... but more importantly PHP and MySQL for your back end code.

What to learn first: Well, I have to suggest Javascript. It ties the web together, it's the glue, and any robust user interface now-a-days is usually made using JS.
