Sites per server?
I found one server with 10,534 websites on it. Pretty much the same kind of site. Is there a reasonable number for a limit?
I have limited myself to 200 sites per server; less if the sites are super-high traffic.

I would imagine that the limit would really depend on the sites themselves, as well as server specs.
For example, I could see placing a couple of thousand one or two page family sites on a single high quality server with proper connections. I couldn't see putting two Google class sites on a single server, despite the server quality and connections.
Probably a better way to decide the appropriate number of sites per server would be to look at server load.

If the sites are all static content, you can put tons of sites on a server. I've seen people who've had 25,000 sites on a server. Like Bubo said, specs of the hardware and site content are what it pretty much depends on.

Is there a limit to the number of connections a server can maintain at the same time? Like, if you got 25,000 sites on a server, and 100 people surfing each site, that's a lot of connections...

A default apache configuration can only handle 256 concurrent connections .. this means 256 people clicking on something at the exact same time. It can easily be increased to handle 16,000 or more concurrent connections. Keep in mind that even if 100 people are viewing a site, only 10-20 of them are actually clicking .. people spend about 80% of their time reading the content and only 20% of their time downloading content.

Do you recommend changing that? I don't know what my servers are currently set to...

By default on Apache the connections are set to 256 unless you recompiled Apache. If you're going to put the amount specified above on a server or plan on having more than 250 people clicking all at once, I'd recommend changing it.

So there is no downside to upping the connections?

You're very welcome. By the way...that TV that you just purchased is awesome. I plan on getting a plasma for myself for Christmas.

QT,
Those guys - www.plamsaconnection.com - are awesome. They are a client of mine, so you can get good deal if you mention you came from me. They have a bunch of =Gov't contracts so they do a lot of volume. More volume=lower prices.

Awesome. I will definitely keep that in mind and if I do infact go with them, I'll be sure to mention your name. Thanks John.
