All contests must post the following information.
- Slogan / Logo (What the design must say)
- GOOD details of what you want.
- Amount paid to winner. (no trades)
- Payment Method(s)
- Format(s) Desired (psd, jpg, etc)
- Contest End Date (Month/Day/Year & Time?)
- 1 Contest Per-Thread
- Feedback is HIGHLY suggested on each entry (so entrents can improve and re-submit)
That's all I have right now, I just did a contest and those are some things I could think of.

what about URLs of designs/colors/layouts/etc that are similar or that the contest person wants?
also, fonts used on the design would be nice, although may not go over well. At the very least the name of the font, please, in the design notes (I am not good at figuring out past fonts, so this is important to me)

I think it would be nice to make a distinction between a contest (with a clear, definitive end date and prize) and a project free-for-all.
When I think of a contest, I generally don't expect to feel like entering the contest would be equivalent to working for peanuts.
Most contests (non web-related) are not stacked against the contestant, meaning the prize generally outweighs the entry effort. However, the contest owner generally benefits from the accumulated entry effort done by all the contestants.
Aka, the $10k Blogger Challenge. A contestant spends a little time here and there for a chance to win $3k. The prize definately outweighs the time spent (because if you are already blogging, then the only thing that has changed is the addition of a new topic, or the addition of new links). However, John reaps the rewards of the hype surrounding the contest, and the link love from all the contestants.

does anybody lock these threads once the contest is done, but before the prize is awarded? Also, have you considered requiring that the prize money be put in escrow?

I think the main one is that the money is paid to the site before the contest starts. It's a safeguard for the contestants. Maybe have it so that half of the prize money is returned to the contest starter if they decide to not use any of the entries, then they still choose their favourite and the other half goes to the creator of that.

that's a good idea, I think. What's to stop someone from posting and then taking the best sample to use? If all he wants it for is web anyway?
