I am surprised at some of the responses.

In the end, the very best camera is the one that meets your specific needs.

I strongly believe that Nikon D300 is the best croped camera. In full frame it's Nikon D700 (or D3X if you have more money).

I own a Pentax K1000 (35mm). I used it for over 30 years.

Three years ago, when I wanted a new digital, I was looking at a Pentax. The one I wanted, wasn't available anywhere, even online. So, my hubby bought me a Nikon D50, which I love.

He also bought me a zoom lens 55 - 200, at that time. I use my zoom all the time, even for close ups. I also have a micro lens, which I hardly ever use.

I needed the heaviness of the camera. I can't hold the smaller ones, I have shakey hands. Also, with my camera there is a setting where all I have to do, is just hold the shutter release button down and take more than one picture at a time. I recently went to my great nephew's karate competition and stood there and took over 40 pictures in a row - without that lag time that smaller cameras have after you hit the shutter release button. I ended up with over 700 pictures that day.

Let us know which camera you choose.

Good luck.
Ellen

I can't comment on the other camera's as I've only had a Canon EOS 450D and it works great for me.

I prefer Canon or Sony.
I believe the Canon colors are "warmer" than for instance Nikon. On the other hand, a small Sony is very handy and user friendly if you wanna travel light.

The thing about digital SLR's is the Glass (lenses) can get expensive. The Nikon came with an 18-105mm (or you can get an 18-200) -lens. This is a pretty good wide angle to medium telephoto lens and covers alot of uses (everything from portraits to landscapes) and you can have alot of fun while you're saving for accessories.

Best Digital Camera

Canon PowerShot SD880 IS

As Canon’s 3rd-generation wide-angle compact camera, the SD880 IS is a solid all-around ultracompact. With a 28-112mm (4x) lens, the SD880 won’t be able to zoom in on far-away subjects or details, but can take great photos of landscapes and large landmarks with its 28mm wide-angle lens.

With an image-stabilized lens, the SD880 should have an easy time with still subjects like buildings or museum pieces. The SD880 also has slightly above-average high-ISO performance and an average f/2.8-5.8 aperture, which should allow it to perform decently, though not spectacularly, with moving subjects in low-light situations.

At 0.9 in. thick, the SD880 should easily stow away in anything from a small travel pouch to a simple pants pocket. The SD880’s battery lasts for 310 shots, which should be good enough for moderate use over several days of travel, which is important if you’re going someplace without electricity.
