I have to second Cricket's thoughts. Depends on your use, and your budget.
As for myself - I started with a Canon Powershot A640 (10.1 Megapixel) which has a flip around screen that makes it easy to shoot at funny angles. It took Wonderful pictures and is compact and makes a great second camera.
If you're looking for Digital SLR's - after alot of review reading I went with a Nikon D90 (because I still wanted a little bit of movie mode). The thing about digital SLR's is the Glass (lenses) can get expensive. The Nikon came with an 18-105mm (or you can get an 18-200) -lens. This is a pretty good wide angle to medium telephoto lens and covers alot of uses (everything from portraits to landscapes) and you can have alot of fun while you're saving for accessories.
I hope you find what you're looking for

Read the reviews and please let us know what you finally ended up getting
