Camera Shopping

I am looking to buy a new digital camera, simply because my old one is starting to crap out on me...

Any suggestions?

I don't want to spend over $500 on it...

I was looking to get between 6-8 megapixels...

Do you have a specific purpose in mind for the camera, beyond the obvious of course?

Will the pictures be more for web use or for print.

If for print, do you have a minimum picture size in mind?

Do you need to be able to take really close high quality product pics?

Yes...

I don't really know. I want something that is good for taking pictures when I'm on vacation.

No worries at all! You have a wide range of choices in the price range you mentioned. I started out with the Kodak Easy Share Camera (4.0 MP) and was extremely happy with it for casual photo taking. I still use it for quick picture taking snapshot type pics. It wasn't until much later that I started wanting more control. I know several people that use the smaller Sony Cyber Shot cameras and LOVE them.

Now days I am in love with my Sony DSC - F828 (8.0 MP) but I have my eye on a DSLR cameras next.

I use my Sony Cybershot N1, absolutely love it.

Either a cybershot with a Zeiss lens or the Lumix with their Leica lens are the best choice, fabulous end products.

Canon are good too. The best thing to do is read reviews online :-

I tend not to trust too much those review sites and similar sites, i prefer forums where i know the users arent being paid to write about the camera, so its more honest

I don't really mean for the reviews as such, it's all technical stuff like the start-up time is 0.001 seconds slower than the previous model etc. and they do weird tests and stuff. I like the reviews pages because they show a lot of pics of the actual cameras and plus sample images, which is really the only way to see the actual quality you're going to get.

I also like to go visit stores that have the actual camera so I can hold the camera and check it out. Some cameras just feel right in your hands, while others can feel awkward.

Note: I am very left-handed so this may be related to that.

lmao... I buy online too, but being so left handed, I like to actually hold the camera when I can.

I like my new Canon SD700 IS for a small camera I can carry anyplace and one that takes AWESOME pictures. Also takes full-size videos which is a plus with a 1gb or 2gb card

Everyone I talk to and all reviews i've read they all love the SD700 as well. It's under $500 btw
