DSLRs have a much higher degree of quality than compact cameras. Thing is, the higher power zoom lens you have, the worse optical quality it has. With a ridiculous 42x zoom, the optical inferiority is likely to be quite noticeable at different zoom settings.

What pictures do you want to take?

The 18-55 lenses are usually kit lens (sold with camera) and are not the highest quality. Generally speaking they are better than a regular digital camera. Quite often they are all a casual photographer needs or cares to purchase.

For most DSLR cameras one can buy zoom lenses up to about 300mm with slower speeds (higher f/stops) before they start to get real expensive. Truly fast lenses (low light, no flash) always costs more.
