Photo's on websites
Hi all,
I was just wondering how everybody displayed their images online? Do you use flickr, host on your own site and if you do host them yourself have you ever had any issues with space/bandwidth?

Are you hosting the pictures on their site and just linking to them from your site?

I use Flickr as well. Sometimes I'll host an image on my site, if its private or not really ment to be all that public.
Even a free, basic Flickr account is going to limit your images to 1024 max width or hieght. When it comes down to compression you can typically get that size down to about sub 30k without noticing any quality loss. So really bandwidth is only going to be an issue if you're hosting large, high quality images by the hundreds and they are all being accessed each month by hundreds or more people, know what I mean?
Of course it also depends on how much bandwidth you have available on a monthly basis. The math is pretty simple on that to get a rough estimation of how many images can be viewed versus how much BW you have.

Nothing is more professional than hosting the images on your own server.

I host all my images on my sites.
It does not take a lot of space on bandwidth if you understand compression and how little it affects web images. Not going to link drop here but I do have a couple of articles about this on a site of mine. PM or ask me if you care to review them.

I will just post it here but not as a live link. This page shows how little compression affects quality:
imagegenie.net/Web-Photography/Compression-Ratios-and-Image-Quality.php
The other two articles are linked from that page including some free resizer programs.

I've been using Irfanview recently, & been happy with the results. I hadn't given any thought to the compression feature, as cropping/resizing created pictures that easily loaded on dialup.
My current free host doesn't allow hot-linking to the pics. So, I use most of the options already mentioned...... ie: picassa, fliker, photobucket, even myspace!
Google has made it difficult to hot-link to the pics on picassa, so using that tends to be hit or miss. Fliker has given me problems with the pictures not showing up, & my free webhost has a tendency to lose my pictures, making it necessary to reload some of the same pictures from time to time!

After reading these articles, I've begun experimenting with the compression feature on Irfanview. Thanks.... I took a 20 kb down to 5 without noticeable difference in quality! This is going to help.

Irfanview looks like my kind of tool, just going to go and have a play now if it can help that much with compression.
