Photography Challenge: CD Cover

CD Cover!

Shoot a genre style image for your fake Band or Singer that encompasses:
-Emotion
-Lighting
-Location/set
-Wardrobe

You’re image must represent the genre you are shooting for. So if you’re shooting Rock, shoot a Rock-style CD Cover… Punk, Easy-Listening…Blue-Grass… etc… Your CD Cover must be representative of the genre.

Use anyone you can, kids, loved ones… Use any location and any props you want. You don’t have to come up with a band-name or fill the image with labels or tags, (though you can if you want) the focus is primarily on the image itself.

The final image:
-No wider than 800pixel
-Square (like a cd cover)

Okay so this is a more advanced challenge. Though anyone is welcome to enter, it does require some knowledge of direction and lighting, among other things.

The CD Cover challenge will run for two weeks, ending the night of May 31, 2008. At that point, I will choose (along with the help of a V7N moderator) the top three entries. I will post the winning entries on my Digital Photography Tips blog, along with a link to each winner's website.*

We will be holding multiple challenges over the coming weeks. You may participate in as many challenges at the same time as you choose to.

It is preferred that you shoot a new image for this challenge and not dig into your old ones. Remember this is supposed to be a challenge. It’s the process you learn from and the images should be shot with intent and stay focused throughout the process.

No place on the instructions does it say you MUST include persons on the cover. A lot of rock band albums covers do not have the group on it. Maybe it's asking people to think to much into it... "The Rock"... a rock group.... a simple band name and image ... oh-well it's quick and I liked it.

I think that was the point of it. To shoot a 'rock band or singer' style cd cover. Not just an ambigous image.

Also what is the genre of the band? It's not very telling.

It does not say YOU MUST use kids or loved ones, I used any location I wanted.

Shrug all you want, laugh at it all you want, the instructions are not clear on what exactly is required. Requirements in the previous competitions were made clear this one leaves it VERY OPEN and I went with it... 1 image that symbolizes A LOT.

I think that was the point of it. To shoot a 'rock band or singer' style cd cover. Not just an ambigous image.

So you want me to find some people, stage them with a background, dress them up and set lighting for this contest... I hope you are kidding.

As far as being ambiguous great that's pretty much what the image point was... that single image can mean a bunch of different things and taken a bunch of different ways. Again, that was the point of the image to get people to think in regards to this challenge.

Also what is the genre of the band? It's not very telling.

Really? It's not telling? That's funny because my previous post went over this. Please read it. And also note, again why I chose this image like many rock bands do. My meaning, genre, etc, are not hidden just make you think a little.

Obviously I am not competing, but I think all y'all are making this more difficult than it is, so I thought I would give you an example that I made today. Just have fun with this!

It was pretty dark and stormy when I took this pic, and I was depending on natural lighting.

Exposure Time: 1/3200
Lens Aperture: F5.6
Focal Length: 300 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Flash Mode: None

Camera: Canon EOS 400D (Rebel XTI)
