Thanks for the replies.
Julien, the only problem is that the URL under consideration is not available as .com with no hyphens. So it's an "either or" situation.
If no hyphens is best, then which is better, greenwidgetsonline.net or onlinegreenwidgets.com?

I would go for the 2nd but it's just a personal choice.
It's either - or

I'd prefer the one without hyphens if it wasn't possible to find a shorter name that suited the need. .com or .net wouldn't matter much.

The second one looks better, even though It has three hyphen's in It.
It looks neater and also is a .com extension, which is the most widely used in the World Today.

Good luck picking one out with all the different points of view.
At least it shows you that there is not a right one and a wrong one. Whatever you do, some people would have wish you did it differently

I don't think it will matter much in searches if they hyphen the name or not. Your site should come up. I get variances of my domain typed in all the time in searches:
la-minerals, L.A.minerals, LA mineral makeup, etc etc....and they find me, and my url is www.laminerals.com (not french though. It's actually L.A. Minerals)
So, I'd go with whichever you want. If .net is a good price and the .com is taken or for sale for a zillion dollars, get the .net. Won't matter at all. Just my humble opinion.

What's to prevent me from using all three (they're all available) and putting the same site on all of them? Is that a search engine no no?

Well, in this case, you would have to optimize 3 sites instead of one.
What you could do is buy all 3 domains and redirect 2 of them towards one.
Then you would have all options available, that would show the same website, without going through the trouble of optimizing 3 sites.

At the last time I see at the browser always the no-end-longs names and for the site they are with good PR, and .com or.net well, when I see the price from domain for sell, that .com have a much high price!
- and for last, the two fact are important, but ... I wish you a good Luck!

I personally don't like double hyphens. I'd go with the .net.

Of the two, I'd say green-widgets-online.com is best. I think .com is better than .net. Normally, I would not use hyphens but in this case it helps readability. The use of hyphens or no hyphens should make no difference in searches.

Muddy here what I think.
Short domain names without hyphen, long domain names maximum 2 hyphens like mine.
In SEO it doesn't matter if is hyphened or not but keep in mind that a domain name should be as short as possible or hyphened no more than 2 times.
Take the example of how Scott created this forum with 3 letters, easy to remember isn't it

Just my 2 cents . . .
It depends on if for the specific site I am depending more on branding or SEO for my traffic.
When the domain name I want is available in both the regular version and the hyphenated version, I personally buy both. For example, I own both www.gncwebcreations.com and www.gnc-web-creations.com
I use the scrunched together version for OFFLINE marketing purposes only. This version is NOT referred to on the net and I have no links pointing to it from anywhere. Telling a potential client on the phone how to find your site is much easier using the scrunched version. In addition, many of us have an actual storefront for our business, besides the online portion of our business. For radio ads, using the scrunched together name is simpler. It is also much easier for people to remember later.
However, on the internet I find it more effective to use the hyphenated version for search engine optimization purposes. The challenge was in the fact that each type of name had their own benefits and I wasn’t willing to give up either. I wanted to have my cake and eat it too!
I use a 301 permanent redirect from the scrunched version to the hyphenated version of the domain.
If I am depending on primary branding, I still buy both simply to prevent someone else from buying the hyphenated version.

P.S. If I can't buy both in the .com version of the domain, I tend to find another name. This is just me being weird though. As the site grows in popularity, I simply don't another company getting the traffic I work so hard to earn simply because I didn't have a hyphen or they forgot mine wasn't a dotcom.

Excellent Cricket, one thing most people forget is to secure the main domain name you are running. Unfortunately you cannot buy all domain combinations, but you can certainly secure the ones that are closest.
Once that is done, you can buy some other related domains over time to secure other keywords.
