Expired Domain - How long before I can buy it?
I have had my eye on a domain for a while now. It will expire tomorrow. If the owner doesn't renew, how long before it will be available for sale so that I can buy it?

Usually they are available right away, but a lot of times they give you a hard time, or someone else picked it up before you. Use the www.verisign.com whois to get the best info on the domain you're tracking.

Damn. According to that, they renewed yesterday
The freakin jerks aren't even using the domain for anything real. It's jazzee.com. I had asked them before if I could buy it and they said they don't sell their domains. A$$holes

It is a real shame when there are great domains around and no-one is building a good site on them

Bum deal
C'est la vie! You should have kept quiet about it and let em forget all about it and it could have registered. Blah. Normally it takes 2-3 months from when a domain expires and when you can register it. Is a pain it takes soooo long!!

Ok, I talked to someone I know from eNom, they said it takes about 67-77 days:
30-40 days expiry grace period
+
30 day redemption
+
7 days pending delete

what happens if you try to register it the day after it expires.
is the former registrant notified of interest, and then given a chance to take it back?
what is the best strategy? wait 3 months or grab it right away...
I guess most importantly, has anyone tried to register a name the day after expiration, and what happens?

I'm guessing it doesn't even become available to try to register till the waiting period is up.

Yes, you have to wait 67-77 days to register the domain, otherwise it just shows up as being taken...

so does this mean that after it expires, if I try to register it too soon, it will say unavailable?
so I keep trying each day until it says available, and then I get it?
does the previous owner find out about my interest?
have you done this?

You won't even be able to try. When you go to register a name, they make you search for it first. The search is all the further you will get.
The owner of the name doesn't find out. Imagine how many emails you would get if every time someone checked to see if your domain was available you got a notice.

The waiting period is so long so those who accidently let their domains expire they can reregister them. Clearly if your domain has expired and you dont notice after 2 1/2 months then others should be able to register it.
I had to wait about 2 1/2 months to grab a domain that had expired. I used godaddys backorder function. It keeps tabs on your domain and tries to grab it the instant it acutally becomes available.
